Bat,
I have Mascot's "The Three Musketeers" released by Roan. Absolutely beautiful print with no extras and I'd give it a solid 7. And it's a true DVD.

Bats,
I have to agree with Rodney about "Monster and the Ape" Fred Shay had the best copy available and I bought this thing from him back in the early 90's and later transferred it to a DVD-R. Great print but the serial is so so at best a 5.

Thanks, Bart. Don Diego says Trev has a great copy, too, so I'm wondering who has the better copy? Any chance someone has both for comparisons?

I'd bump Cap'n Video up a point. They even restored the color sequences! And the DVD came with (and still does, so far as I know) a big colorful booklet on 1950s TV sci-fi, written by me. It's one of my favorite things I've done. Just sayin'.

Oh, and the Cheezy Flicks menu for King of the Rocket Men screws up the chapter titles and misspells Dr. Vulcan's name! Since we're whining about Grood's credits we should mention that, maybe.

And thanks, Bats, you're probably right (I gave it away and can't check).

Sounds good, will do. I'll add the part about the booklet, too.

Same with the KotRM credits, thanks.

No prob, I'm definite it's the AC Comics version.

I like your breakdown for rating the quality of the releases, too.

Thanks for the reminder, Bart, I do, too and I agree. I will add it.

I'd add that the three stand-alone Flash Gordon releases from Image have extensive liner notes, too. Dunno about any reissues.

How is "absolutely beautiful" a 7???

Off the top of my head, the very best serial releases on DVD I can think of are the Green Hornets, The Miracle Rider, Image's Flashes, the Batman and Superman serials from Warners, and Roan's Undersea Kingdom, but I'm gonna go through everything and check.

And when I say very best I mean image/sound quality, of course. I'd rather watch Junior G-Men as a 6 than Superman as a 10 1/2.

Oh, and that boxed set of all four Dick Tracy serials from VCI is wonderful, too.

I'd give Archer about an 8.5.

Here's a review that should explain what you'd get.

And it's since been upgraded to Blu-ray, just sayin'...

The Monster and the Ape, Cheezy Flicks, 2 discs (real DVDs, not -Rs), includes trailers for Zombies of the Stratosphere and G-Men vs. the Black Dragon, plus clips from King of the Rocket Men and trailers for other Cheezy offerings, including Convoy. Oh, and snack bar ads. I guess if I'm tough, I'd give it a 6 under my new system, the night scenes are too dark.

In a quandary on this one. Do I list the Cheezy Flicks version, on real DVD, or Trev's version on DVD-R. Which one is better, I currently own neither of them, so can't compare.

Batman is the Decider, no?

Maybe you could list both. I have never had a prob with DVD-Rs, myself, personally. I also watch VHS tapes I bought in 1982 and there's no problem THERE, either. It's a funny world.

I wish we could post screen grabs of things, and then we could compare and contrast even various grey market dealers.

I'm going with the recent Image/Madacy 3-pack re-issue, which uses the same prints from the old Image DVDs, plus includes a 24-page booklet, "Flash Gordon & the Golden Age of Comic Strips," with text by David Fiore and containing a number of illustrations from the comic strip by Alex Raymond, which is an "extra feature" not present in the old set. I do believe it has the old set's liner notes, too, but will check my set when I get home.

Captain Video doesn't have color sequences. They are tinted which is not the same thing.
