If I had something on DVD in the PAL format, is there anyone out there who can transfer it onto another DVD in the NTSC format? Thanks. |

Seems like it's worth a try, but jazzy will weigh in with the real stuff sooner or later. |

Format conversion can be tricky. There is computer software out there that will convert from PAL to NTSC or the other way round but you have to start with a computer DVD device that can handle PAL. Most can but most are also region-locked so that they will only play your local region DVDs. You are usually limited to playing only 3-5 DVDs from out of your region until the device locks. Again, there is software that will get you around this but it is generally not cheap. Another approach is to use a video capture device (I have mentioned these in other postings) and a computer DVD burner and the proper software (there is free software available) to convert the format. You will still need a player that can play PAL to feed to the computer. The problem is that the results may not be perfect. There may be some quality loss and the needed speed adjustment may not be perfect. If you just want to be able to watch something, then this conversion will be good enough as long as you can tolerate these possible quality differences. The best solution is to play the original DVD back through a region-free DVD player that will work with your TV. For most North American TVs, you need a region-free player that can do PAL to NTSC conversion. Some North American TVs are able to play native PAL content when fed that. (This is one place where the rest of the world has an advantage over those of us in North America. Almost all TVs sold in the rest of the world are multi-format sets.) It is possible that someone may already have a DVD player or Blu-Ray player that will play back other region disks. Many players (particularly those from Korea and China) can be made region-free for DVD playing by entering a "secret" code via the player's remote control. Some web searching will usually enable you to find out if you have one of these players and what the code is. A few players can be made region-free via a hacked firmware update. Other players require hardware modifications. All of the Blu-Ray players I am even remotely familiar with require hardware modifications to enable region-free playing of Blu-Ray discs. |

Thanks gentlemen for your replies. I knew you'd come through. The owner of the Pal DVD I want to get says it should play on most machines. When I get the DVD I'll try it and if it doesn't pay will try to get code and upgrade my DVD player. Will report results here. |

Thank you AndyFish for the generous offer. I do not need anything converted after all. |
