Why no Cody in Zombies of the Stratosphere?

I don't post here much because I had a long period where, between work and kids, I wasn't able to watch serials regularly. However, I started exercising more regularly - which, ironically enough, serials seem to perfectly complement. There are tons of full serials out there on the more reputable video sharing site, and you can generally watch 2 chapters of a serial during a 30 minute workout.

Anyway, because the chapter lengths of the later Republics fit a 30 min workout window perfectly AND I am a glutton for punishment, I chose Zombies of the Stratosphere as my latest serial. I'm two chapters in, and I have a pressing question - why ISN'T this a Commando Cody serial? What made Republic change the hero's name from Commando Cody to Larry Martin? I've read elsewhere it was written as a Cody serial, but then changed right before production, but no sources seem to indicate WHY this happened. It does seem like it is set-up for the Cody character - the hero is barely introduced in Chapter 1, and the set-up with the hero/his friend/his lady friend matches the set-up of Radar Men from the Moon.

Looking forward to some more frequent posting!

Wasass,
I've always wondered that myself because the rocket man serial released prior Radar Men from the Moon starred George Wallace as Commando Cody. Either before or right after Zombies of the Stratosphere was filmed, Republic started filming Commando Cody, Sky Marshall of the Universe which was released to theaters as complete 30 minute episodes starring Judd Holdren who plays Larry Martin in Zombies. The only difference is that this Commando Cody wears a mask. This series was later shown on TV in 26 minute episodes. Why the name change? maybe they didn't want to confuse the public with one Commando maskless and one masked.

I cannot believe I didn't think of watching these during my daily workout, I've been struggling to get through some serials on a daily basis for an upcoming project and you just solved that problem perfectly. Brilliant!

I've not gotten to this one yet, but I was aware of the character change and wondered myself, but there is very little continuity between the republic connected serials, Zorro comes to mind.
