Let's Go Collegiate (1941) Dir. Jean Yarbrough One of a series of "college musical-comedies" Monogram put out in the 1940s, and it takes no effort at all to point out that this film is terrible, as (I'm makin' an educated guess here) probably all of them are. The "kids" consisted of Frankie Darro, Jackie Moran, Keye Luke, Mantan Moreland, Gale Storm, and Marcia Mae Jones, and say what you want, at least they were a diverse group. Toss in 2 or 3 songs, some stupid comedy, some clueless adults, and find some sort of plot ending, of course, with the Gang winning the "big game" against an arch-rival college, and there you have it. In this one, the rowing team has recruited a hot-shot oarsman who gets drafted before he can report to college, and the boys' girlfriends had planned a big party to introduce him, so the boys recruit some mug off the street to impersonate the guy for the party, but the mug LIKES college girls (imagine that) and decides to stick around through classes, dances, and the Big Game against an arch-rival college. Million-dollar Dialog: Frankie, explaining what the strange older men are doing at the frat party: "They're just a couple of old grads who came back for the reunion before the big race tomorrow. There is what is known as a necessary evil." Mantan: "Like playin' horses, huh?" Tris Coffin and Frank Faylen are amongst the grownups; Gale Storm is pretty and sings okay and the songs are innocuous enough but I'm really glad that Mantan 'n' Marcia get to sing one, too, but I really only watched this because I wanted to update the Monogram area of the Balcony and because Mr. Panzer challenged me to watch better pictures and you'll recall that the LAST time he did that I responded with Yongary, Monster from the Deep. When is that guy gonna loin??? |

Never. No Chan, no Stooges. Life is too short, dumb is too dumb. And Monogram musicals? No good music, no script? Hey, you watch it. |

Oh, I do! Y'know, If you only go to the movies occasionally, or watch a film once in a while, I can see where you'd want it to be a good one. But most of us watch a ton o' stuff. How is a Monogram musical appreciably worse, in the grand scheme of things, than yet another formulaic Republic or Universal B-western? I like those things just fine, and heaven knows seeing Stanley Price as a cravenly haberdasher secretly informing to the evil banker is enjoyable no matter how many times you've seen it, but what th' heck. I've got some old playbills from a movie theatre with upcoming shows, and if I wanted to, I could've gone to see Nothing Sacred and The Great Waltz (and would've) but I probably would've been just as jazzed about the nabe showing Bullet Code with George O'Brien, Special Inspector with Charles Quigley and Rita Hayworth, Let's Pretend We're Sweethearts with Lola Lane, Sky Bandits with Renfrew of the Mounties, and Flight at Midnight with Phil Regan. The popcorn tastes better at movies like that, Mr. P. |

I've spent a lot of my life in the grind houses, Mr. G., and I know what you're saying; I just don't enjoy wasting time as much now that I have TCM and a whup-ass recorder, and can watch the things I missed when they came out. This does not include B westerns, B musicals, pseudo-noir Hammer pictures, NASCAR pictures or travelogues. Or, for that matter, Mexican wrestling vampire pictures. Loved them back in the day, but they're all alike so it's old news. At my age, the goal is staying awake. |

Well, we have such a plethora of choices. I'd hate to get to the point where I'm done watching Abbott & Costello meet Frankenstein, Notorious, or Guys and Dolls because I've seen them so much it's a waste of time, and I hope I don't get to the point where 65 min. Monogram movies aren't ever a good enough way to spend an hour. I don't watch sports except very rarely, watch zero TV except what's on DVD that I can "program" to watch when I want, and only get about 5 hours of sleep a night, so I have plenty of time to watch stuff. Oddly, other than our FNF get-togethers, I'm tired of serials, although I'm certain that will change again. Well, not CERTAIN, but I assume. In any case, I've completed my Hammer-rama, and eventually I'll get finished with the Hitchcock saga, and am considering a lot of other things to take their place. Once the silent feature comedies are done, I'm heading into the talkies. I'm in mid-1927 in THAT little thing, so The Jazz Singer is around the corner and 1928 brings us The Cocoanuts, for heaven's sake (released January '29) so those new-fangled talkies are a-comin'. Maybe you can sum me up by saying I'd rather watch Glenda Farrell than Elizabeth Taylor, and Allan Jenkins than Ronald Colman. |

Oh, strongly disagree. Love that movie and I've never met a kid yet who wasn't wild about it. If it had a song by the Andrews Sisters it would be perfect. |

Excellent point. When I was a kid I wanted to see this film more than any other. Unfortunately, the theatres in my vicinity were all owned by the same family &, for whatever reason, they NEVER booked any Universal product. Consequently, I didn't get to see the film until I was an adult. I'm sure if I had seen the film when I wanted to, I would have the same nostalgic feelings others seem to have. However, as an adult, I was appalled. It wasn't good horror & it wasn't good A&C. |

I too was a late comer in catching A & C Meet Frankenstein at age 50 or so. Agree: disappointing in humor and horror. |

Disagree completely. A&C Meet Frankenstein is a hoot, with some creepy moments. One of the Boys' best, IMHO. |

Honestly can't recall. I wasn't an adult, but I wasn't 6 years old, either. |
