Pagan Island (1961) Dir. Barry Mahon A sailor adrift in a lifeboat tells the skipper who rescues him the incredible story of how he'd been shipwrecked on a jungle island of beautiful 23-year-old topless white brunettes who worshiped a Sea God that looked like an 8 foot tall Gumby with bad teeth. Well, I suppose I should make it clear that this isn't a good movie. It's one of those things that looks as though it were made for a couple of grand, tops, with cheap sets, bad no-name actors, a lack of action or interesting camera angles, and not much plot to speak of. That said, if you like gorgeous Bunny Yeager models wearing next to nothing, well, you'd enjoy this movie as much as I do and did. The fact that the girls have perfect tits on display (a LOT) really trumps their lack of acting skills, let me tell you, bub. Leading man Eddie Dew has a lot of acting credits, mainly Westerns, but you wouldn't know he'd ever acted before based on the talent he displays in this picture; gosh, I wonder if maybe something wasn't... distracting him? Nani Maka plays, er, Nani Maka, the virgin to be sacrificed to the Sea God if she can maintain her sole qualification for the job, and she's having a lot of trouble doin' that with Eddie around, y'know? Best of all is Trine Hovelsrud as the Queen of the Island; she's only middlin' attractive, she can't act at ALL, her accent is so thick that every time she says "Sea God" you'll think the girls are worshiping a seagull, and she reads her lines (phonetically, probably) off an off-screen board (it's quite obvious) so she's spends the film looking over the shoulder of whomever she's talking to. I wish not to cast aspersions, but one wonders how, er, SHE got the part.' S'okay, I won't tell you which part of the topless native girls I was lookin' at. Not over their shoulder, exactly, though, I can tell you that. Million-dollar Dialog: Nani Maka: "Queen say white man bad. I no think so. Tonight I dance for you." Director Mahon also gave us Rocket Attack U.S.A., Cuban Rebel Girls, Naked Moonshine, and Santa and the Three Bears. Obviously, the man was a genius. An excellent print of this must-see film can be found via Something Weird Video on a fine, fine Image DVD.

It's public service announcements like this that give me hope for humanity. I've got Pagan Island in my cart, it's a two-movie set, paired with the not-boring-sounding FIEND OF DOPE. Thanks, LG, for cultural experience. |

Well, actually, it's Fiend of Dope Island, a no-budget 1961 exploitation film starring... *shakes head sadly*... Bruce Bennett. |

Thanks, Amazon had Island cut-off on the main heading and I didn't notice it on the DVD case. Sounds even *cough* *cough* better. Poor Bruce. *sigh* |

When Bruce had a good director he was OK. He's just one of many who looked stupid in stupid movies. |
