One of the things I like about this place, is that I don't feel weird at all saying that Monogram managed to do some things right. Fall Guy is a movie that I had never heard of, and was unable to find a ton of information about it. I'm pleased to say that this movie contains pretty much everything that they did well. Fall Guy is based on a short story by Cornell Woolwich (Cocaine). I've not read the story, but the movie tells the tale of Steve Cochran, a guy having a tough time after the war, and by all accounts and purposes, drinking way too much. He meets up with a guy at a bar, who takes him to a house party. At the party, Steve has a few more, and wakes in a room all alone...except for a dead body. Everything about this movie works, and even the generally heavy handed "Don't do drugs" message isn't too terrible. Reginald LeBorg directs. Elisha Cook Jr and Robert Armstrong co-star. Even Iris Adrian turns up, and literally made me laugh out loud. Apparently the movie theater in the film is doing a double feature of Decoy and Don't Gamble With Strangers. All that for 85 cents. A really, really good movie. Available from Warner Archive. |

At the Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention a few years ago, when I programmed an entire day of movies adapted from Woolrich pulp yarns, Fall Guy was very well received. It's not very faithful to "Cocaine" aside from the basic situation, but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. It's no Phantom Lady or Leopard Man, but it plays pretty well for a Monogram. After typing the above lines, just for the hell of it, I looked at the Woolrich filmography in Mike Nevins' bio-bibliography. Warner owns the rights to nine Woolrich-based movies, Universal owns six, and Columbia owns four (two of them being Whistler movies). Isn't it about time somebody brought out a DVD box set of Woolrich noir? |

Couldn't agree more. And after that, a Jonathan Latimer box. |

I thought I had this movie, on a six movie set from Something Weird Video called WEIRD NOIR, which includes a movie called FALLGUY. But I just checked and that film is from 1962. I actually almost watched it last night, but opted for another movie on the set. And I know this was a mostly pointless post, but it does keep us one more ahead of the word-gamesters. |

Bats, that is truly a bizarre set of films. Don't miss The Naked Road, as seedy a film as I can imagine. Equally tacky and hilarious and disturbing. |

I agree, LG, and I've already watched THE NAKED ROAD, so I added my thoughts to the helpful link that you provided, so as to not hijack this thread's theme. |

![]() Fall Guy (1947) Dir. Reginald Le Borg This was our B picture Saturday night, and for the second week in a row, it proved way more popular than our A movie. Thanks for the tip, gang! Million-dollar Dialog: Penn: "I wasn't DRUNK. I was just FEELIN' good." Outstanding little movie, lots of choice dialog. Loved it. |
