House of Hate, a long-missing Pearl White serial, will be shown Sunday April 12 at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens. It's listed as running 180 minutes, which seems a bit short for a 20-chapter serial. I assume this is the feature version found in Russia a few years ago. (It was said to be a favorite of Sergei Eisenstein!) Anyway. consider yourselves alerted.

Here's the link:

Nice, JD. Please report back on the experience, the print quality and the audience reaction. Wish I could be there.

So do I. This is news, especially since the Great Panzer is in the cast. Now, somebody, how about The Exploits of Elaine? I know the Cinematheque Francaise has a long, long serial called The Mysteries of New York made up of the first Elaine and two others. If Lobster/Blackhawk could manage to pry one five hour serial out of them how about an even longer one? It would really flesh out our knowledge of silent American serials, especially since the few we have are so lame.

Just dreaming I guess, but Elaine was one of my favorite viewing experiences of all time. Granted, I was 22 when I saw it.

A couple of months ago, Grood did post chapter one in the Squadron, and I thought it was very good. I think he is planning to release it one of these days. I believe the reason for the short running time is that it is a 10 chapter condensation.

Just got back from a long and expensive day in NYC to see this serial.

Counting up all the expenses -- gas, tolls, parking, admission, lunch with Black Tiger and HiYo Silver before the screening and dinner with John Doe afterward -- it cost me almost exactly a hundred bucks to see House of Hate. That's a lot of dough to see one serial one time. And, hell, it wasn't even the whole serial, just a three-hour feature version.

But you know what? It was worth every penny. Worth. Every. Penny.

Gotta say, RR, a hundred bucks sounds like a bargain, considering it was New York City.

Definitely a great deal, to see a silent serial for the first time, even if it was the feature version.

Actually, the meals were the least expensive part of the day. Lunch was actually brunch, and I got a ten-dollar special: breakfast burrito with string fries. Dinner was Mickey D's in Time Square; John Doe wanted to stroll around the nabe and see the bright lights before flying back tomorrow morning. And fast food was all I had time for.

What killed me was the parking, which came to exactly $35 with tax.

But I repeat: It was well worth it to see Pearl and Antonio Moreno in their respective primes in a peak-period Pathé serial.

Riddle Rider - I've never met you but I've been to 3 or 4 Serial Fests with Black Tiger and Hi-Yo Silver. Both knowledgeable, fun and interesting guys!!
Would have loved to have been there - so how are they and what did you talk about??
Thanks, Sgt King

Sarge: BT and Hi-Yo are fine, and we talked mostly about serials, natch.

Yesterday I posted a blog entry about the House of Hate screening. You can read it here:

Great article, thanks for sharing, the serial sounds like a real winner. I wish I had the chance to see it. One can hope a DVD release of this comes out. Is it possible that whoever owns this print might put out a DVD release?

I doubt there will be a legitimate DVD release. But now that there is a digital master with English subtitles, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of a pirated version circulating.

Frankly, I didn't think House of Hate would get any further exposure here following the Museum of the Moving Image screening. But Tom Meyers of the Fort Lee Film Commission posted to my blog's comments section a short note indicating that it'll be shown in Fort Lee sometime in the near future.

Thanks, RR. I guess I'll have to keep my eyes open at any conventions that might have it.

I did see Mr. Meyers' post in your message thread for the article, so maybe there's a chance for a screening up here in Canada?

Very good piece, rr.

Incidentally, George Eastman House has a complete print of The Exploits of Elaine with titles in French. They cooperated with the Treasures from Film Archives folks so maybe there is some faint chance of a home video release. I saw the movie years ago, and loved it. Pearl White was insanely spunky, and there's a heap of improbable serial stuff. A great ride.
