Action packed full-tilt adventure from Republic

Daughter of the Jungle (1949) - 69 mins
Starring Lois Hall, James Cardwell, Sheldon Leonard, James Nolan, William Wright, Jim Bannon, Frank Lackteen & George Carlton
Directed by George Blair
Flying above the African jungle and piloted by Paul Cooper (James Cardwell), a plane is caught in a violent thunderstorm. Also carrying government agent Kenneth Richards (Jim Bannon) and his prisoners, notorious Chicago gangsters, Dalton Kraik & Camser (Sheldon Leonard & James Nolan), the small plane is forced to crash land. Everyone survives, but now they must survive many dangers as they journey through the jungle to safety. En route, the grim quartet runs into eccentric millionaire, Vincent Walker (George Carlton) who vanished a dozen years before and was presumed dead. With the tycoon is his lovely, somewhat feral daughter, Irene (Lois Hall). The girl, who has successfully adapted to her surroundings, now calls herself 'Ticoora' - and her expertise in jungle survival proves indispensible as the travelers make the arduous journey to civilization. Father and daughter are eager to get back to home, since the girl has a large estate and fortune she can claim - but a renegade native chief Mahorib (Frank Lackteen) and Kraik work in concert to undo their efforts.

James Caldwell does well in this, his closest thing to a lead role of a very short career - one that was tragically cut short when he died by his own hand a few years later, aged 32.
He's all action man here: a massive unit with the squarest of jaws and an engaging temperament.

Lois Hall does a good 'jungle girl' as well. She played the female lead (as ' Lady of the Lake'), in George Reeves' Columbia serial The Adventures of Sir Galahad (1949). The following year she was paired with Buster Crabbe for another Columbia serial, Pirates of the High Seas (1950)

This does sound like a fun outing. How are you guys getting it, it doesn't appear to be available commercially.

The idea of a jungle picture with Shelldon Leonard suits me. There are bound to be laffs.

Marc Lawrence is the guy who talked just like Sheldon Leonard. Only he talked like Leonard before Leonard did.

I'm a fan of Sheldon Leonard - is there anyone who acted, wrote, directed and produced so prolifically as this guy?
He 'registered' with me in Alan Ladd's first starring role: Lucky Jordan (1942). His charismatic portrayal in that film as racketeer Lucky's 2nd in command, Slip Morgan is spot on - he usurps Lucky when the latter gets caught up in the draft
Excellent film which is similar to Bogie's All Through the Night (1941) wherein the gangster is hero as he takes on Axis spies

Thanks, I did IMDb him, but there were a few to choose from. I've seen a few things he's been in, but his performances don't stand out at the moment, so for me, the nod goes to Leonard.

And his turn as Nick the bartender, in IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, is just perfect.

So, Hat-head, how can I see DAUGHTER OF THE JUNGLE?

Well, I wasn't suggesting either one of them needed a "nod." Lawrence was a good actor whose work covered quite a few decades. The only reason I mentioned him was that I seemed to remember reading somewhere that Lawrence resented Leonard & felt that Sheldon had stolen his schtick.

Of course, I also mentioned him 'cause I figured no one would know who he was.

Geez, I knew.

Always thought of Leonard as that comic race track guy, calling Jack Benny over to his corner with a "Psst."
Lawrence was always the actual gangster for me.

Not saying anyone needed a "nod", just noting Leonard made more of an impression on me. Apparently, I could run over Marc Lawrence and not know who he is.

My copy is coming (along with a mess of other Republics and Universal Crime Club films) with a buddy who is bringing them to the Cincinnati Old Time Radio Convention in a few weeks.

Not sure if any of the usual grey market sources have it or not.
