Thanks, Rodney, figured it'd be one of those I'll have to hunt down. I'll keep an eye out for it. |

Nobody's yet mentioned that this movie is built around stock footage from the 1941 serial Jungle Girl, with Hall wearing Frances Gifford's togs, Cardwell dressed like Tom Neal, and Lackteen in his "Shamba" outfit and makeup. It's fun and definitely worth seeing, but "great" is not a word I'd use to describe it. It's pretty common from bootleggers, and two versions are available. One was mastered directly from a 16mm print, the other copies a master VHS tape made when Daughter was broadcast on TV some years ago in a package of Republic movies intended for late-night airing. In this second version it's obvious that commercial breaks have been edited out. Picture quality of both is comparable, and not all that good. |

Thanks, RR. Didn't know about the JUNGLE GIRL footage. Also good to know what quality is out there. Appreciated. |

A couple of notes here, since I started the thread... I didn't call the film "great" - just "Action packed full-tilt adventure from Republic" I don't normally comment of my perception of the 'dramatic worth' of what I'm watching - yes, I enjoyed it, but I enjoy just about any Republic I don't highlight "Million Dollar Dialogue" nor do I mention "stock footage" or anything else that might detracts from the film per se Instead, something simply stated, like: "Lois Hall does a good 'jungle girl' as well" is sufficient for me In regards to print quality, I might point out that a lot of satellite transmissions of films outside of the US is done in full 1080p (eg England) The station logo is often positioned bottom right (and always on show) - actually its bottom far right so that it appears in widescreen telecasts but not on the viewing section of 4:3 films So when reframing (4:3 films) for DVD, the station logo disappears (ie is excised) And commercial breaks within movies are an anathema to viewers of Pay TV - so there are no commercials within ... (though they still exist on Network TV - which is often euphemistically called 'free to air' TV) A friend of mine once asked a satellite TV programmer about the occurrence of "such wonderful 'old' films" in the schedule The reply: Customers complain when there is too much repetition in a 24/7 schedule - so we fill in with 'old stuff' ... because its cheap! Such things may well also be the case with US Cable & Satellite delivery of films - as I don't live there, I can't comment I've already said more than I should be saying, so I'll now depart the thread ... Bats, I got my copy which is off 16mm from one of my grey market dealers. Quality wise I'd give it 7.5 to 8 but its very watchable. If you need the dealer email me. Barcroft |

Marc Lawrence was more menacing than Sheldon Leonard, more of a heavy. Leonard was relaxed and funny playing hoods. He's wonderful in Guys and Dolls. I just saw him in Sinbad the Sailor and he was really, really incongruous in Middle East togs. Fedora, I love your reviews the way they are. |
