Attended the annual CineVent Movie Festival in Columbus on Saturday. This is one of the big ones and I'm glad I only live 80 miles from it. Soooo many movies showing, DVD’s, movie paper of all sorts and very interesting people and dealers to talk with. Watched over “Thunderbean” animation honcho Steve Stanchfield’s shoulder as he did color correction on one of the cartoons in his forthcoming Willy Whopper DVD collection. Wow -- that’s a complicated process! These cartoons are all from the early 1930's. I fondly remember watching them on TV about 1953. I'll get this collection! Watching Steve with me was cartoon guru Thad Komorowski of the “What About Thad?” animation site. Talked again with Jay Rubin from “Classic Images” magazine, “In The Balcony” contributor “Rodney” and also James D’Arc from Brigham Young University film archives who was instrumental, with Dr. Grood, in getting the last of Republics “missing” serials “Daredevils of the West” released. Always interesting to talk with Bob Bloom (aka Zorro The Fox) and he told me about the “Cliffhanger Fest” he attended in April. This was truly “the last chapter” . . . with no cliffhanger resolution - the last time the “Fest” will be held. Talked with 2 dealers about finally getting some of my movie posters, serial and western stuff ready to sell. Couldn’t find even one of the movies on my “want” list and the classic rock and roll dealer I trade with was not there so I ended up spending very little money. But a day of complete movie overdose is always fun! |

Wow, the end of Serilalfest (or Cliffhanger Fest as it was later called). What happened, Sarge? I thought that would run for years. |

Serial Fest died when Grood alienated the fans. Cliffhanger Fest showed videos, and I wouldn't drive across town to watch videos. A fun crowd, but there was no real attraction.

Mr. Batman, Cliffhanger Fest attendance has steadily fallen over the last six or so years. Marc Provost, aka "Ace Drummond" of Rutherford, NJ was the "William Witney: Serial Director Supreme" of Cliffhanger Fest and I believe another reason was that it was getting too expensive. Marc always covered any costs that attendance fee's did not. And these out-of-pocket costs to him were getting considerable! So . . . Ace Drummond, Black Tiger, Barcroft, Hi-Yo Silver or ANY of the other serial attendee's - I'm re-lighting the large flaming "Z" on the hillside signaling you, and other legionnaires, to answer this call with your capes, insights and thoughts on the reasons for the demise of "Cliffhanger Fest" and the breakup of such a great, fun and intelligence group of people. Come-on, even if you haven't been to one of the serial gatherings recently - chime in here - give us your input or it's . . . . THE PIT!! |

Thanks, Sarge. That's a shame. Never did make it to one. |
