The Boxtrolls (2014) Dir. Graham Annable & Anthony Stacchi

Visually fascinating but stunningly unpleasant steampunk 3D animated stop-motion animated film from the guys who did Coraline, which I didn't like, and ParaNorman, which I didn't see.

Victorian England, and the people in town wear white hats and eat expensive cheese purchased with the money they raised to build a children's hospital. Mr. Snatcher and his minions wear red hats and are tasked with capturing and destroying boxtrolls, monsters who hide in boxes until nightfall, when they come out and steal things, including babies, which they eat. Except they don't REALLY eat babies, and Mr. Snatcher isn't destroying them, he's using them to build a hideous machine for some nefarious purpose. Meanwhile, a little boy who thinks he's a boxtroll and a little girl fascinated by the thought of watching babies be eaten team up to thwart Mr. Snatcher.

If this sounds like something you'd like to show your grandkids, well, have at it.

Million-dollar Dialog:
Little girl: "Where are the rivers of blood? I WAS PROMISED RIVERS OF BLOOD!"

As I said, it's fascinating to look at. I'm not sure what the intended audience is, though. It sure isn't me - I didn't like The Nightmare Before Christmas or Corpse Bride, either, two equally unpleasant movies (this one's better). (I DID like James and the Giant Peach, though.)

"I'm glad that this question came up, because there are so many ways to answer it that one of them is bound to be right." - Robert Benchley
