I cannot attest to the accuracy of this article about the mysterious trail of the Monogram Film Library staring with the late 40's and television syndication packages. figure it is worthy of a link to the Monogram Week Page....

Fascinating stuff, although dizzying beyond words. The ownership graph is what really grabbed my attention. Had no idea that Paramount owned the rights to the Renfrew and Range Busters series. But figures that they'd own something beyond the two endlessly-discussed Lugosi titles. I didn't really know WB had some titles going all the way back to 1937, like "Federal Bullets" and "The Outer Gate" and such. I'd assumed all those late-1930s items would have been under the UA/MGM umbrella. I also thought Kit Parker had the Joe Palooka films along with the Jiggs and Maggie series, but that doesn't seem the case.

Also interesting to learn Paramount has a few later Monograms I wouldn't have expected, like "16 Fathoms Deep" (1948 version) and "County Fair" (1950), preceding the large batch of AA's that they have. Good to know this, so I can forget about any hopes I might have retained for releases through the Warner Archive line.

I'm guessing the absence of info on some of those early-era Monograms that are known for their rare (lost?) status indicates they might never have even made it to the earliest stages of tv-syndication. Always curious about "The Midnight Patrol" (1932), as I've long had a lobby card to it. A few of those early oddities were still around, as I recall a few like "Wayne Murder Case" (Strange Adventure) (1933) and "Police Court" (1932) on some late-late shows even as late as 1979. I wonder if any of the pre-Monogran "Syndicate" films were ever part of this mix. Ah, well. Like I said, pretty dizzying.

It certainly has the aura of Who's on First.........In fact what Batman is doing (printing it for later reading) is the best way to probably absorb it....it is a tad overwhelming.....

On a side note concerning the syndication packages sold to local TV stations in the 1950's....the Studios had little interest in their product.....and most of the deals were cut by independent individuals who made some serious money brokering these deals.

For the Paramount-owned titles, there's a vague possibility that some might show up some day from Olive Films since Olive seems to release some other studio stuff Paramount owns. Of course, this would depend on Paramount supplying a master and I doubt many of these have been mastered for even DVD quality.

I was content to bookmark it, for future spreadsheets.

I thought WB controlled the whole shebang.
