Thanks for all the advice, gang, but I was asking about transferring tapes to DVD. Turan, what I meant was if my player is in DVD mode, and I haven't started playing a DVD, it would say "_DVD" on the screen, but it continues to show that while I have a tape playing, so I can't view the tape.

Jazzy, I did see those devices on Amazon, but don't know which one to choose. Any recommendations? With one of those devices would I be able to watch a tape, and would I get good quality transfer to DVD. Also, how easy are they to set up and operate.

BTW, today is 16 years since I retired from the post office. Last thing I did was I went to the public address system for the building with a CD player, and broadcast to the entire building, "Take This Job And Shove It." I had a friend videotape me doing it, so that is one video I want to put on Youtube. I shook hands with my long suffering supervisor, and told him, "This is the happiest day of your career."
I wouldn't buy the cheapest one. Any of those in the $20-30 price range should be fine. They are very, very simple to operate and should include everything you would need. They actually work with any device that can output video since I used the same type of gadget to transfer my old LaserDiscs. The quality will of course depend on the input quality (GIGO). The results should be decent but don't expect spectacular. If you get one and have questions about using it, don't hesitate to ask me. It's been a while since I used mine but I can usually find out what I need to know quickly.

What you are trying to do with the device is not to watch a tape but to transfer the contents of a tape to a more modern medium. The resulting file will be playable on any computer or can be burned onto a recordable DVD-R. These days, I would skip the DVD and just create a playable file.

Once you transfer your tape of that Post Office event, you should easily be able to upload it to YouTube.

I've transferred hundreds of tapes to DVD. One thing you're forgetting - all the "Republic released" serials on VHS have COPY GUARD on them and will not copy straight! I have a copy buster, about the size of a pack of cigarettes, that has 2 video/audio inputs and 2 video/audio outputs (4 jacks) and an AC plug. This goes between the VHS player and my DVD maker. Works like a charm and my DVD's turn out excellent.
You ought to see my excellent (not pristine) DVD of Song Of The South I copied from a VHS tape I bought in England 20 years ago. Yes, it was PAL and I had that transferred to American NTSC by a buddy in Belgium before coping it.

One more thing I forgot to add. Saw the writing on the wall and 4 years ago I bought 2 extra DVD recorders and 2 VHS/DVD combo units. They're stored high and dry in my basement till I need them. There may still be some units out there - mostly at garage sales. Grab 'em!!!

In my experience the kind of converter devices I linked to don't have any problems with copy guard coding.
