Judging by the box art, Jazzy, I would guess it is a repackaging of the earlier Sony releases.

I'm grateful for the various contributions to this thread, especially as I was one of the unfortunates who had a bootleg DVD bumped up from the VHS. After looking at the packaging on the eBay listing I bought one of the DVDs immediately. It's going to be from the standard-def master prepared in the mid '90s from a brand new 35mm print, but it'll still look better than one of the bootlegs. Columbia's repertory division had the new 35mm print struck after the Alex Baldwin Shadow movie was released. I know the serial played in revival houses in New York and Los Angeles — I saw it at the Film Forum in NYC — but I'm not sure it was booked anywhere else before being issued on VHS.

Anyway, I'm delighted to upgrade my copy. And for only $9.99 plus shipping — such a deal!

An apparent lurker here pointed out on HTF that this is also now carried by Amazon.

Type in "The Shadow 1940". Current price is $13.

I'm sorry you feel I'm bored and went away. Ouch.

I'm sorry, my current "real job" takes a lot of hours and we have a special project going on. I'm also working on some other stuff for web and print. I'll be back.

Mill Creek contacts me about stuff but neglected to mention this, which is indeed officially licensed. I'm in touch with them to see if more serials are possible.

Thanks, LG, looking forward to more official serial releases.

And I'm sure that people were just trying to say how much they miss your witty missives, in their own inimitable style.

Well, it's an Amazon exclusive - why there was no publicity about it, my pal doesn't know. He says no further serials are planned "that he's aware of" and he's in product development.

Geez, thanks LG, good news all around. (Does anyone know of a sarcasm emoticon?)

I was just teasing you, as usual, LG. Believe me, if I actually thought you had left, I would have been right behind you.

I ordered it through Amazon. If it was an exclusive, they definitely kept it well concealed.

I got mine on E-Bay. The seller claimed to have sold 22 already and had 10 left. If he got his from Amazon, he wasn't making a profit on E-Bay, unless they cut him a heck of a deal for a volume purchase. While I was fooling around on E-Bay, I discovered some outfit by the name of Red Circle Media selling practically any serial you can name for $8.98. I'm guessing these are DVDs made from copying the VHS tapes, but I've never heard of these guys before.

I don't like serial sellers who are still selling bootleg copies of serials that have been released officially. The four serials that really bug me are the two Batman and two Superman serials.

It's jerks like this that make the studios throw up their hands and say "why bother?" when it comes to releasing serials officially.

I watched episode three of the Mill Creek Shadow DVD; it's a beautiful print with a "Columbia Pictures Television" logo tagged on. I spot-checked several other episodes, too (all 15 are on one disc). Very, very nice release, in my opinion. I wish we hadn't watched this serial so recently on FNF.

Great to hear, LG. I'll be keeping an eye out for a deal on this release. I wish they had advertised this exclusive more, as it is, the best I can get it for from Amazon North is $78.

The problem I have with this thread is that I have the original Columbia VHS release of this serial......I don't want to be a "wet blanket" but I watched it once and that was enough!
I like Victor Jory and I like serials. However, this one is, in my view, terrible notwithstanding VJ's presence.
The cliffhangers I recall as repetitive (building falls down/explodes,resolution= hero scrambles out from debris, dusts himself off and walks away regularly....
The culprit is of course director James W. Horne who should never have been allowed near a serial .
So, whilst I understand the enthusiasm for the release of good quality prints of serials, as far as I am concerned this one can remain under the rubble from which its hero too frequently and unimaginatively escapes.

Never fear being a wet blanket around here, Outie! Dissenting opinions are always welcome. Heck, they are encouraged!

I've only watched the serial once, and it's been a while. Even though I am a James Horne serial fan, perhaps I should rewatch the copy I have, before diving into the upgrade.
