Kino announced they are releasing Daredevils of the Red Circle on DVD and Blu Ray. No official date listed yet, but the announcement was made at Home Theater Forum recently. I will keep you posted as I get more info.

They have a second title, but have not announced what it is yet.

This is already under discussion in the Upcoming Releases on the Balcony Radar thread in the Balcony Banter section. www.blu-ray.com has also confirmed this. It will be released late this year.

One wonders how many non-diehard serial fans are going to pick up Daredevils of the Red Circle to sample a serial and decide that they're stupid, hokey, and redundant because they tried to binge-watch the damn thing instead of watching one chapter a week with a cartoon and a movie.

A chapter a week just doesn't work for me anymore. I not only can't remember what happened in the last chapter, but I'm liable to forget I was watching a serial at all. A chapter every night or two is more suitable for me. Wait till ya get older and you'll see what I mean.

I daresay binge-watched serials hold up just as well as today's action movies (especially the superhero stuff), which are nothing more than a succession of overdone fights and chases anyway. The serial just makes you fast-forward through credits every 20 minutes—no big deal for most people.

If anything hurts Daredevils' reception among civilians, it'll be the scenes involving Snowflake. I have a higher tolerance than most for such stuff, and those Snowflake scenes even make me cringe.

I'm with you fellas, at least two chapters a night for me, sometimes three, if the serial is especially exciting.

Don't take this as gospel, but one serial friend heard that the second serial will be KING OF THE TEXAS RANGERS. I have no idea what his source was, or if it is even true.

Kino still has nothing on their site about this release. Was there a time frame given, when it was first announced?

I think by the end of this year. That is as definite as they were. Typically future releases don't show up on a company's website until around 1-2 months from the release.

Mr. Lime, the Kino representative at HTF, also says that Lobster Films found a complete original 35mm nitrate negative of the 1933 RKO film "Deluge", and that Kino will be releasing a Blu-Ray after a limited theatrical run. No specific date yet.

It was, of course, the film from which all those NYC-drowning-in-a-tidal wave scenes appearing in Republic serials were borrowed.

(If you want more, his comments appear in post 3550 (page 178) of the "Offical KINO insider" thread on the Blue Ray forums.)

edit:

Here's a link to that thread:

Thanks, Mr Hale. I'll be early in line for DELUGE, after seeing parts of it over the years, it will be nice to see the whole thing.
