Hey, I looked it up and everything, and they didn't say nuthin' 'bout no technocrat havin' to be a moneybags.

tech·no·crat
ˈteknəˌkrat/

noun: technocrat; plural noun: technocrats

- an exponent or advocate of technocracy.

- a member of a technically skilled elite.

Yes, "-crat" is merely a suffix meaning partisan or practitioner of (fill in the blank).

A plutocrat is therefore one who espouses or wields wealth, but that particular usage has no carry-over to other similar word formations.

In the words of Paul Panzer, "I'm surprised I have to tell you this" [kidding, but I'm still enjoying this post immensely].

Does it deserve it's incredible reputation among serial fans, at least judging by Chapter 1?

Yes.

Jazz, I don't agree that the three leads are wooden, they are all very likable. In chapter one, Dave Sharpe delivers one of the dumbest lines of all time. When the Daredevils receive their first Red Circle note, Sharpe asks, "But what is this red circle for?" Brix has to remind hm that is their own symbol, to which Quigley reacts like he forgot about that also.

In the fight on the offshore oil derrick in chapter two, when Quigley jumps down to a lower level of the platform, his vest suddenly disappears.

While this is certainly one of Republic's greatest serials, and probably has one of the greatest plots of any serial, it is disappointing on how uneven it is. Some chapters like, one, two, four, eight, and nine are among the greatest chapters ever, with it's unmatched location work at such ideal locations as an off shore oil rig, chemical plant, boiler factory, oil field, and refinery. It also has some real weak chapters. Chapter five is one of the weakest chapters of any serial from Republic's golden age, and chapter six isn't much better. At the beginning of chapter 10, the story returns to the Granville Mansion, and remains there for two and a half chapters.

In chapter three of DAUGHTER OF DON Q, A mug shot of Roy Barcroft is shown, and his prison number is also 39013, and a couple of years ago in the Mandrake the Magician comic strip, Mandrake goes to prison undercover to investigate trouble, and his prson number is also 39013.

Here is the strip

Hey, Pa, that wasn't me who said they were wooden! I've always liked Brix/Bennett, even in his earliest stuff where he is pretty stiff. He's clearly improving at the time of this outing. As to the other two, their acting is quite serviceable for a serial and maybe even a bit better than needs be.

Fred Fredericks, who drew the strip, was a big serial fan. I spoke to him once years ago and we compared notes, so to speak.

Sorry, Jazz, I was looking at your name when I typed that. I hope that doesn't mean as punishment, I have to give away my Thelonious Monk collection. :P LOL

I figured with a name like Jazzguyy you would be a Monk fan. I turned my son, Trigger Stark onto jazz when he was a little kid, and is really into Monk, Miles, Satchmo, Trane, Dizzy, and Sonny. A few years ago I took him to see Sonny, and my son was blown away by him.

That was me that called them Wooden, and I have a pretty extensive Thelonius Monk collection as well-- I stand by my sentiment, maybe they loosen up after Chapter 1 but I've not seen anything further yet.

I realized I credited the wrong person with that, sorry Andy. I received an email today saying that my shipment of DAREDEVILS OF THE RED CIRCLE and MYSTERIOUS AIRMAN shipped today.

One of my friends went to see Monk perform in San Francisco back in the 60's, and when he arrived at the club, he saw a man standing outside the club pointing at the moon. He thought to himself, "That has to be Monk."
