I've been reading, and enjoying, a book called Ape-Man: The Unofficial and Unauthorised Guide to 100 Years of Tarzan, which chronicles Tarzan's appearances in books, films, TV, etc.

I think you will find the Gord Scott character reboots worth seeing Tarzan the Magnificent and Tarzan's Greatest Adventure - N more broken English for the Ape man and Sean Connery and Jock Mahoney co starring

"Tarzan and his Mate" (1934) is an exhilarating thrill-ride.

The mid-40s RKO-released Weissmullers are good fun, in a sort of undemanding, Saturday-matineeish way. Things dip a bit, but then "Tarzan's Greatest Adventure" (1959) shows up, and is intensely exciting. A must-see.

Thanks, guys. I do have both the Weissmuller boxed sets. I have only watched the first two, so far. The first one is a bit of a chore, but TARZAN'S MATE was a treat. According to the book, the rest of the series is uneven but entertaining overall.

The book also posits that TARZAN'S GREATEST ADVENTURE may be widely considered the best Tarzan film so far. It also gives high praise to TARZAN THE MAGNIFICENT.

Any thoughts on the Ron Ely series? Or any of the later efforts?

The Ron Ely series would have been much better if they dumped the kid I found Jai somewhat irritating - Cheeta was far more sympathetic and a much better actor. My Grandmother liked it though.

Thanks, Don.

I also meant to mention that the Ely series was cancelled after two season, despite great ratings. The decision to axe it came with 6 episodes left in the second season. But the writer of the above Tarzan book said no reason could be determined why this happened.

Has anyone else heard different?

There's a lot of good ones;
TARZAN AND HIS MATE
TARZAN'S SECRET TREASURE
TARZAN'S DESERT MYSTERY Tarzan vs Nazi's and a giant spider
TARZAN TRIUMPHS or is this one Tarzan vs Nazi's-- I think they both are.

The Jock Mahoney Tarzan's are really good-- TARZAN IN INDIA is my favorite of those.

Mike Henry plays Tarzan in three movies which are very much like James Bond meets Tarzan and very similar to the Ron Ely show which is also excellent. Henry was in the running to play Batman before they opted to go comedy with Adam West.

The Lex Barker ones I've seen so far are excellent, and in fact, as I watch these chronologically I believe I've reviewed most of the Tarzans of the '30s and '40s.

I've seen every Tarzan feature and serial with the exception of the three "lost" silents and have found something of merit in almost all of them. Even the one with Bo Derek.

Thanks, guys. I plan to pick up the Barker/Scott/Mahoney/Henry/Ely sets for sure. I have all the available silent stuff.

RR, have you also seen the TV shows from the 90s and 2000s? If so, they have some merit, too?

How about the Disney stuff?

I haven't seen the later TV shows, just the Ely series. And I'm not interested in Tarzan cartoons, so i haven't seen the Disney stuff.

Thanks, RR. Though I do enjoy animated fare, I'm not in a rush to see Disney's version unless I hear some positives from Tarzan fans.

The post-Ely TV series pretty much fall in that same category.

Bats the 91 Wolf Larsen Tarzan series is currently being shown on the silver screen channel (337 for my set up) It has an ecological lean and being a half-hour show is reasonably fast paced. In addition it is a joint Canadian production so I believe you have to watch it to avoid being kicked out of the country.

Thanks, Don! I've never heard of the channel and checking it now (it's channel 324 for me), I see I don't get it. But I'm going to look into adding it.

I also notice they are running a chapter of the GANGBUSTERS serial at 6am.

You don't happen to have a link for their guide for upcoming shows?
