Next Time Drive Off The Cliff !

I'd love to read a good book on Mascot. Is this it?

I can't find any reviews and it's not even listed on GoodReads.

Hi Bats,

I'm holding my copy in my hands. Well, I WAS holding it in my hands and put it down to type this. LOL! Yes, "THIS IS IT", if you want a good read about Mascot.

This is a large (9X11) hardcover book that does an excellent job of outlining the films and history of Mascot and the tiger. It gives a bit of info on Nat Levine, but the info on Mascot's serials is outstanding, with tons of still photos and several appendixes.

I haven't actually read it for around 25 years, but remember being highly entertained as well as informed.

My copy says COLLECTORS' EDITION LIMITED EDITION 1500 COPIES. I have no idea if they ever did a 2nd edition, but it is available on E bay and Amazon.

Thanks, 'Cat. According to World Cat, there appears to be three editions, all from 1968. And some of the ones listed for sale on Amazon don't appear to be that limited edition you have (lucky guy!). I'll definitely look into tracking down a reasonable copy, thanks.

The book doesn't happen to have an ISBN does it? I'd like to add it to GoodReads and that always helps.

Bats,
The best thing I can say about "Calling Tracy" is that it's informing. But I think "Serial Adventures" is the better of the 2 Van Hise books I posted because of the interviews with Buster Crabbe, Kirk Alyn and Frank "Junior" Coughlan, Jr. which are included in the book.

I seem to recall that this one has some photos of cast and crew from Mascot serials that aren't in other books.

Thanks, Bart. It sounds like I'll be putting the James Van Hise books (which there seems to be a few of) at the bottom of the "get to read" pile. They sound more like fan-boy writings, rather than at least semi-professional undertakings.

Bats,

I can't find an ISBN# anywhere in this book. This appears to be an unusual book. I've never seen anything like this before.

It's listed as:

Copyright 1968

GENE FERNETT

All Rights Reserved

Cinememories Publishing Co.
Box 3493
Cocoa, FLA. 32922

MANUFACTURED IN USA
BY
BREVARD PRINTING CO.

I have a huge book collection but, I have never seen this listing of the the printing company in any of my other books. Or at least I never noticed it on any other titles. I think this is quite unusual and must just be a privately published book. Who knows?

Thanks, 'Cat. Sounds like it, and if true, I don't believe it qualifies for listing on GoodReads. No biggie, but appreciate you looking into it.

John Doe,

Yes there are many behind the scenes cast and crew photos in this book, but I won't, can't verify whether they have been published in other books or not.

Bats,

You're welcome my friend. No trouble looking it up at all. Shear laziness. I never put it away the last time I dug it out. LOL!!

Since I'm recommending this book, check out Amazon South. Rosette's Books has the same edition as I have in VG condition and signed by the author for a mere $18.95 plus shipping.

Brevard Printing Co. was probably just a local print shop. A number of books on the list are private publications. I think the Jack Mathis titles were really, yet are of the most professional standards.

JD,

You're probably, most certainly correct about a lot of these titles being published privately. Yes, the Mathis books were certainly quite professionally done. The title "NEXT TIME DRIVE OFF THE CLIFF" also had a professional look and feel to it. My only complaint, if any, would be the dust jacket, which looked like a fan effort rather than professional. But that's strictly my own opinion, and others may dispute it and I would have no problem with that. To each his own.

I'm glad that this thread has been started, as we may discover a lot of things that we've never heard of before, and could lead to some very interesting reading. It's quite amazing that when you think you've become quite jaded with one of your hobbies, someone can stir the pot and rekindle your passion. (Thanks Bats!)

Calling Tracy! - Six Decades of Dick Tracy

This is another book by James Van Hise (see above). Need more feedback on his work, as so far it doesn't sound like it's worth pursuing.

Anyone?

I ordered it as it was dirt cheap ($1.45) it is yet to arrive though

Bingo. Van Hise is the ultimate fan-boy, and you won't find a thing in his writing that you wouldn't already have found in other books. He does no primary research.

By the way, Fernett's book on Mascot is no great shakes either. Much as I hate to admit it, Tuska's Vanishing Legion, while pompously written and riddled with errors, is a more usual resource on Nat Levine and his serials.
