Full Speed (A Fond) (2015) Dir. Nicolas Benamou
Chic Films
91 min. / color / 1.85:1 / French with English subtitles

A dysfunctional French family (harassed dad, extremely preggers mom, two young children, and a clueless, clumsy granddad) head for a long car ride to the beach in the new family wagon, but they don't get very far without driving each other crazy. That's the least of their problems, though: the stupid car's cruise control sticks at 80 and won't shut off, and they're careening down the countryside creating havoc while they continue to annoy each other.

Screamingly funny and exciting comedy that was a huge hit in France (the program called it a cross between National Lampoon's Vacation and Speed, but it's way better than both). In between screaming with laughter, my date was squeezing my arm so tightly she nearly broke it a couple of times, but hey, part of the fun of going to the movies, eh? (This was an offering today at the annual French Film Festival.) José Garcia (who looks a lot like Robert Downey, Jr.) is the dad, well-known French dramatic actor André Dussollier is his father, Caroline Vigneaux is a scream as the pregnant wife, and a wealth of French names show up in cameo parts.

Million-dollar Dialog:
Police Captain, watching the carnage on the highway caused by the runaway family car: "There's no shortage of morons in the world."

One can see an American remake coming up, but the French film is wonderful and if you get a chance check it out.

Do you rank this ahead of Amélie?

Always be yourself! Unless you can be Batman...then always be Batman!

No, but this is a slapstick and that's a romance and I'm a sucker for romance. plus my oh my - that Audrey Tautou is peerless.
