Don't forget that November 25th is the birthday of Sherman S. Krellberg. Wishing you and yours the best this holiday season. [Sherman S. Krellberg day is a made up holiday like Festivus, but for serial fans. You can celebrate by watching The Lost City several times, serial or feature version, or any of the serials re-issued by Filmcraft.] Just kidding folks. Hope all of you in the serial family had a good Thanksgiving. Time to get started on holiday gift buying before it gets too late! |

Somehow my wall-calendar failed to denote "Krellberg Day." But traditionalist that I am, I certainly want to honor these national holidays. It probably is time for me to give "The Lost City" a new spin on my dvd-player. I'd been pondering what serial to revisit next, after having re-watched "Secret Agent X-9" (1937 version) earlier this month. But I do have a bone to pick with Krellberg, as he did something long ago that caused me to be out ten bucks earlier this year. In 1935 he took the film "Outlaws' Highway" (1934) and distributed it under the title "Fighting Fury." It's a film starring Kazan the dog, accompanied by John King (not 'our' familiar John King from Ace Drummond, but Kazan's trainer). Anyway, this title "Fighting Fury" was also the name of a Jack Hoxie silent Universal western from 1926, which is of even more than usual interest as it also offers Helen Holmes as leading lady. There's a pretty common arcade-card from the film, which I've long had a copy of. Anyway, I always figured it was a 'lost' movie, but this dvd outfit, "The Film Detective" was advertising it on Amazon and elsewhere for purchase. The cover of the dvd-case depicted Hoxie, and the description fit the 1926 film. I ordered it, in hopes that maybe this was some newly surfaced Kodascope or Play-at-Home print of the Hoxie western, but alas, it was that 1934 Kazan flick that Krellberg re-named. Ten bucks. "The Film Detective" got some kudos for their "Vampire Bat" release earlier this year, but their ridiculously clueless misrepresentation of their "Fighting Fury" disc as being the Hoxie film merits a kick in the pants. |
