![]() The Jungle Book (2016) Dir. Jon Favreau 106 min. / Color / 1.85:1 DVD/BD: Disney A little boy named Mowgli, raised in the Asian jungles by wolves (it's kind of a long story), runs afoul of Shere Khan, a really, really, REALLY mean tiger. Forced to journey to the man village with the aid of his pal Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear, Mowgli has to duck, dodge, and hide from not only the tiger, but a sexy snake, a giant ape, and this 'n' that. These Disney live-action remakes haul in a ton of money (I suspect that young teens who don't wanna particularly go to the cartoons think these things are okay) so it appears the studio will keep makin' 'em. Beauty and the Beast was an abomination, Cinderella was alright (but everybody knows how it ends), and Maleficent was so-so, and none of 'em were better than their original model, and neither is this, but at least it's got some wonderful voice casting, including Christopher Walken as King Louie, Scarlett Johansson as Kaa(!), Idris Elba as Shere Khan, let's see, who else... Oh, Ben Kingsley and Bill Murray as, respectively, Baggie and Baloo. Oh, yeah, and Garry Shandling as a porcupine who observes all the rules. Somebody named Neel Sethi is our 21st century Sabu, and he's fine. Million-dollar Dialog: Shere Khan: "I can't help but notice there's this strange odor today. What is it, this scent? It's almost like some kind of... man-cub." There are two songs in it, and they're okay, plus a third one if you stick around through the closing credits (all three are from the old movie) and since I missed the music in most of the other live-action remakes I think it's nice they're included, although Bill Murray, my friends, is no Phil Harris. Eh. Not bad, and it was a date movie, so what th' heck. There's so much CGI it's practically animated, anyway. |

I like the original and I saw it in the theater when I was a kid, plus I bought the Blu, ya know, for nostalgia's sake and I liked it also. I also had the LP so I enjoy the Baloo song immensely. My wife bought me a set of plastic figures at an auction a few years ago and they're based on the original film and they're swell. This new film? I might watch it if it were to be on TV and I only had that one channel available AND I had nothing else to do AND I were to be tied to a chair. Other than those 4 thing aligning...nope! |
