Maryland Requires Wal-Mart To Spend More On Health Care
Wal-Mart Says Measure Singles Out Retailer

ANNAPOLIS, Md. --
Maryland lawmakers have voted to enact a first-of-its-kind measure, requiring a single company -- Wal-Mart -- to spend more on health care.

Supporters of the vote, which overrides Republican Gov. Robert Ehrlich's veto, said the measure will also help save money on Medicaid spending.

The measure requires companies who employ more than 10,000 Maryland workers to spend at least 8 percent of their payroll on health care or pay the difference into the state's Medicaid fund.

Of the state's large employers, only Wal-Mart spends less than 8 percent on health care.

Labor unions said they want to pursue similar laws in at least 30 other states.

A Wal-Mart spokeswoman said the big retailer was singled out because of "partisan politics" and that Medicaid's problems go beyond the behavior of one company.
I think many states are going to follow this. Score one against the evil Wal-Mart! ;)

If they worded it as "all large employers" then I'm ok with it, but if they singled out Wal-Mart...can't that be considered unconstitutional for singling a group out?

I agree it's great...as long as it stays in tact.

After reading it I have determined what happened.

The bill makes all companies that employ 10k+ Maryland workers has to pay at least 8% in health care costs, either directly or to the state's health care fund. Only one employer of that magnitude didn't do that: Wal-Mart. This bill just makes that payment by all companies law, but really only effects Wal-Mart because they didn't already do it.

Alright, so it's fine then. Wal-Mart will try to sue anyways, but it won't win.

I'm sure they will, and I hope they won't.

And according to APM's Marketplace Maryland has four companies that fall under the law. Wal-Mart is the only one not paying.
