New Cyber-Attacks Focus On Servers That Run 'Net
Experts Prepare For 'Katrina Of Internet Storms'

WASHINGTON --
There's a new kind of unusually powerful Internet attack possible. It can overwhelm popular Web sites and disrupt e-mails by exploiting the computers that help manage global Internet traffic.

The chief security officer for VeriSign Inc. said security researchers are preparing for "the Katrina of Internet storms."

The new kind of attack was first detected late last year. It directs such massive amounts of spurious data against victim computers that even flagship technology companies can't cope.

VeriSign's Ken Silva said attacks earlier this year indicated a remarkably powerful electronic assault.

The U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team, which works with Homeland Security, warned network engineers in December to properly configure their name servers to prevent hackers from using them in attacks.
