McManus retires as a player; joins TSN

TSN announced today 3-time Grey Cup champion Danny McManus is joining the CFL on TSN broadcast team as a game analyst.  The 17-year CFL quarterback announced his retirement from the League earlier today.

McManus will make his broadcasting debut on June 28 during TSN's coverage of the CFL season-opening doubleheader.

McManus will work 28 games this season, the majority of which will be alongside play-by-play announcer Rod Black in the broadcast booth.  TSN will use a three-man team on several occasions this season with McManus joining Chris Cuthbert and Glen Suitor in the booth.  For select games, McManus will provide analysis and insight from field level.

"I've been playing football for more than 25 years.  I've loved every minute of my time in the CFL.  Football is in my blood and I look forward to the next phase of my career as an analyst on TSN," said McManus.  "It'll be nice to reunite with Matt Dunigan.  It's been a while since we were teammates."

McManus joins the popular CFL on TSN broadcast team of Cuthbert, Suitor, Black, on-site host Brian Williams, studio host Dave Randorf, and studio analysts (and former CFLers) Chris Schultz, Hall-of-Famer Matt Dunigan and Jock Climie.  McManus and Dunigan were teammates in 1992 with Winnipeg.

"We were blown away by Danny's audition.  He's articulate, entertaining and sure knows his football," said Jim Marshall, Executive Producer of Events, TSN.  "With Suitor, Dunigan, Schultz, Climie and now McManus, TSN almost has enough key players to start our own CFL team."

All 50 of TSN's CFL telecasts this season will air live on TSN and TSN Broadband, with a minimum of 35 broadcasts airing in High Definition on TSN HD.  The majority of HD telecasts will air Friday nights during the 11th season of the weekly staple Wendy's Friday Night Football.

As one of the CFL's most successful quarterbacks, McManus sits second on the CFL's career passing list with 53,255 yards and 3,640 completions.  In 2004, he became just the third player in CFL history to pass for over 50,000 yards.  Throughout his storied 17-year career, McManus made six Grey Cup appearances, winning three championships (1990 with Blue Bombers, 1994 with Lions, 1999 with Tiger-Cats).  In 1999, McManus was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Player and Grey Cup MVP in Hamilton's victory over Calgary.  McManus played for 5 teams throughout his CFL career: Winnipeg, B.C., Edmonton, Hamilton and Calgary.

"I'm very pleased with my career having played 17 seasons," said McManus. "I feel very fortunate to have played the CFL game as it was a truly unique experience that has brought me countless memories. The two things that I will miss the most is the competition on the field and the guys in the locker room."

McManus fills the analyst role previously held by Leif Pettersen, whose new full-time job does not provide him the time needed to fit TSN's extensive coverage into his busy schedule.

The Stampeders were sad to see McManus go after a brief tenure with the club.

McManus joined the Calgary Stampeders during the 2006 off-season. He dressed in all 18 regular season games including the Scotiabank West Semi-Final. During regular season action McManus completed 16 of 28 passes for 280 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.

"During your lifetime you get to know a limited number of first class individuals," said Stampeders Managing Partner/President Ted Hellard. "For me I feel fortunate to list Danny amongst those I have had the opportunity to meet. The Stampeder organization wishes Danny the best as he moves forward and I am sure our paths will meet again."

"It's been a pleasure to have the opportunity to be with Danny in both Calgary and Edmonton," said Stampeders head coach Tom Higgins. "Over the years it's been exciting to watch Danny's career unfold and see what he's been able to achieve. He is a consummate pro and will be long remembered."
