The National Lacrosse League announced it has awarded a franchise to the city of Boston for the 2008 season. The Boston team becomes the league's fourteenth franchise, and will play its home games at TD Banknorth Garden, the home arena of the NHL's Boston Bruins and the NBA's Boston Celtics. The team also announced former NLL star Tom Ryan as Head Coach. The expansion Boston team will begin play in January of 2008.

"Our league and its member clubs are excited to be in Boston," said Commissioner Jim Jennings. "We have a lot of NLL fans throughout New England, and they will now have a team of their own."

The ownership group will be led by Tim Armstrong, President of Advertising and Commerce for Google. Armstrong is also a former lacrosse player at Connecticut College, where he was a defenseman and team captain.

"We are excited by the growth of lacrosse both here in New England and across America," said Armstrong. "Sports fans of New England will now have a National Lacrosse League team of their own to root for. TD Banknorth Garden is a great venue for indoor lacrosse, and we look forward to building this organization into a legacy franchise here in Boston."

The Yanks are coming!

From BlazersLacrosse.com:

After a decade on the sidelines, the Boston Blazers today return to the National Lacrosse League (NLL), revealing its team name and new blazing red and white team colors to fans across New England. The Blazers, the newest and 14th member of the NLL, begin their inaugural season in January 2008 at the TD Banknorth Garden.

The Blazers face-off against the New York Titans on Jan. 19 in their home opener. The Philadelphia Wings, Toronto Rock, Minnesota Swarm, Rochester Knighthawks, Portland LumberJax, Buffalo Bandits and Chicago Shamrox also battle the Blazers at the Garden in a 16-game regular season. (Please see attached schedule).

Team officials also announced that Blazers group, individual and season tickets are available by calling 1-888-TIX-BLAZ (849-2529) or visiting www.blazerslacrosse.com. Tickets are $75, $50, $40, $35, $20 and $10 and are also available at the TD Banknorth Garden Box Office and all Ticketmaster outlets.

“I grew up a Blazers fan and I’m thrilled that fans across New England will once again have the opportunity to root for them,” said Blazers Owner and Littleton, Mass. native Tim Armstrong. “Lacrosse is not only the fastest growing sport in New England, but also across the country.  The name ‘Blazers’ is both nostalgic and also appropriate.”

The thirst for an NLL franchise in Boston was finally satisfied on May 9, 2007 when the league announced it had awarded a team to Armstrong, who is President of Advertising and Commerce at Google, Inc. The team that day also announced former NLL star and former Boston Blazers standout Tom Ryan as head coach.

While the Blazers name may be familiar the logo is certainly not. The new Blazers logo features a lacrosse player’s darkened silhouette next to a red flame that blazes from the team’s name. The Blazers also introduced the “Blazer B,” a red capitalized “B” with flames shooting out from the top. The Blazers team colors are red and white.

Well, it's not the Boston Massacre as I had been hoping, but it'll do. And it's a heck of a lot better than the old Blazers logo.

Inside Lacrosse has learned that regardless of whether the NLL and the PLPA can agree on a new collective bargaining agreement and play the 2008 season, the expansion Boston Blazers will not start until 2009.

Owned by Google President of Advertising and Commerce for North Armerica Tim Armstrong, the Blazers were scheduled to be the NLL’s only expansion franchise for the 2008 season, putting the league back in New England for the first time since 1997. The Blazers are going to play at Boston’s TD Banknorth Garden, home of the NHL’s Bruins and NBA’s Celtics.

Sources told IL that NLL Commissioner Jim Jennings announced to the PLPA via a conference call Tuesday that Boston would not be able to salvage the ’08 season should something be worked out on a new CBA.
