The Rochester Knighthawks defeated the Arizona Sting, 13-11, in the 2007 NLL Championship presented by Edge Active Care at Jobing.com Arena on Saturday. John Grant was named Championship Game MVP with a three goal, five assist performance. The victory marks the first time Rochester has won the title since 1997. The Knighthawks never trailed in the game, holding a five-goal lead early in the fourth quarter before having to withstand a late Sting comeback.
Grant's goal 58 seconds into the fourth quarter appeared to be the beginning of the end for Arizona, giving Rochester an 11-6 lead. However, Arizona scored four straight to cut the score to 11-10. Craig Conn's goal, a diving rebound shot, capped the run with nine minutes remaining in regulation. With the crowd energized by the streak and Arizona pushing for more, Rochester's Luke Forget found Bill Greer, who scored on the ensuing faceoff to stop the bleeding.
Shawn Williams scored to put the Knighthawks back up by three, but Conn scored his fifth goal of the game only seconds later to cut the score to 13-11.
That's where Knighthawks star goalkeeper Pat O'Toole came in. O'Toole finished with 42 saves, including 11 in the fourth quarter, shutting out a powerful Sting offense playing with desperation.

Congrats to the Knighthawks.
They have the longest playoff streak of any team, advancing in all 13 of their seasons of existence (and in all 11 of those in NLL). They take the Champions Cup for the first time since 1997. In addition, the K-Hawks ended their season on a 15-game winning streak, going 15-2 overall (including playoffs).
A well-deserved victory.

The Harrisburg City Islanders defeated the Richmond Kickers 8-7 in a nine-round penalty kick shootout Saturday night at the University of Richmond Stadium after playing to a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes of regulation and overtime. It was the fourth USL-2 title game to go past regulation in the last five years.
The fourth-year City Islanders pushed the USL Second Division Final into overtime on the strength of a first-half Islander goal by Brian Ombiji. The defending USL-2 champion Kickers drew level on a Ricky Schramm goal in the 75th minute. Defender Dustin Bixler of the City Islanders was named MVP of the USL-2 Final following the match.
“Bixler played a remarkable game,” said Harrisburg Head Coach Bill Becher. “He improved in every match this season and continued to take more and more chances away from Richmond as tonight’s game wore on. He really stepped up his game in the final and as part of a defense that is incredible, he stood out this evening.”
The long night of action began in the eighth minute as a letdown in Harrisburg’s stout defense allowed Richmond’s David Bulow in one-on-one with goalkeeper Matt Nelson. Nelson expertly cut down the angle Bulow had on goal and in the end, Bulow was left with a decent-at-best look at the far post. Bulow took the shot, it went wide by about a half foot, and Bulow looked to the sky as if to say he should have done better.
Richmond’s offense looked to their leader, USL Second Division MVP Mike Burke, on the right wing throughout the first half, but Harrisburg limited his one-on-one chances with quick arriving second and third defenders. Burke’s chances were limited to several trickling deflections that Nelson quickly gobbled up.
In the 17th minute Harrisburg counter attacked. Working up their right flank, they played a quick ball in to forward Brian Ombiji. Working towards the left side of the pitch Ombiji got off a low shot that Pascale handled with ease. The ensuing punt however, was won by Harrisburg.
A rapid ball over the top sent fellow striker Steve Fisher in on goal as much as Bulow had ever been. But again, practiced goaltending prevailed. Pascale limited Fisher’s look on goal to the near post and Fisher, having to put a little more velocity than placement on the strike, knocked it into the outside netting of the near post.
The end to end action continued nearing the 40th minute.
This time Richmond, in almost the exact same scenario as Bulow’s earlier attempt, broke in on net after receiving a feed from Bulow himself. Bulow played a timely ball between two defenders to midfielder Sasha Gorres. Gorres’s first touch was perfect in receiving the pass but his second, after taking a look at Nelson charging off his line, sent the ball over the end line. The move to charge off his line proved perfect for Nelson, a habit Harrisburg has grown accustomed to over the past 17 games.
Beating the halftime whistle by seconds, Harrisburg took a huge step towards their bid for the USL Second Division Championship on a play that started with their calling card – good defense.

Congratulations to the Harrisburg City Islanders, the reigning champions of the United Soccer Leagues' Second Division. This is their first championship in their four seasons of existence.

For a man who weighs only 165 pounds and stands just 5’8”, Tulsa Talons WR JEFF HUGHLEY sure did carry a heavy load on Saturday night as he helped his team to the second ArenaCup championship in franchise history, 73-66, over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers.
Tulsa QB JUSTIN ALLGOOD capitalized and ran in his second rushing touchdown of the night, giving the Talons a 73-59 lead with one minute to play.
The Pioneers wouldn’t give up without a fight. The reigning U.S. Army Ironman of the Week, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton WR/DB LARRY KENDRICK took K LUKE PHILLIPS’ kick into the end zone, making the score 73-66, Tulsa, with 52.2 seconds to play.
Tulsa recovered the onside kick attempt, but then WR JERMAINE LANDRUM fumbled and the Pioneers’ recovered with 44 seconds left. The Talons defense stood tall once again and the Pioneers last attempt with 3.8 seconds left fell incomplete, crowning Tulsa the champions of the af2.

Congratulations to the Talons on a hard-fought victory.

Midfielder Matt Striebel scored three goals, including the eventual game-winning goal with 5:42 left in the fourth quarter, and added three assists as the Philadelphia Barrage became the first team in Major League Lacrosse history to win back-to-back championships with a 16-13 victory over the Los Angeles Riptide in the NB ZIP MLL Championship Game at PAETEC Park on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, the Barrage became the first team in league history to win three league titles. Philadelphia also won the MLL title during the 2004 and 2006 seasons.
After attackman Ryan Boyle gave the Barrage a quick 1-0 lead, the Riptide countered with back-to-back goals from attackman Michael Watson and midfielder Graham Gill for a one-goal advantage. Attackman Jed Prossner scored off a Striebel feed to tie the game at 2-2 with 9:19 left in the period.
Led by three goals from Striebel, the Barrage put the game out of reach by scoring five of the final six goals for the three-goal victory.
“It was tough for us to play back-to-back games, especially from the mentality standpoint,” Striebel said of the Barrage playing in their second game in 24 hours. “We had a team dinner last night, which has been a tradition for us, and we were able to get our focus for today.

Congratulations to the Barrage on two straight Steinfeld Cup victories! Hopefully you'll be able to try for a third from Philadelphia.

After 263 regular season games and six post-season games, National Pro Fastpitch has a new champion, as the Washington Glory knocked off the Rockford Thunder 3-1 in Sunday's championship game.
Washington, who was an expansion team in the league, was the top NPF team all season long. The Glory won the regular season title with a record of 34-10 and followed that up by going 3-0 in the postseason.
Glory and Team USA pitcher Monica Abbott picked up the win for Washington. She pitched the first five innings and didn't allow a run to the Thunder. The win was her second of the weekend over Rockford, the first being a no-hitter on Saturday morning. With her efforts Abbott was named the NPF Championship Series Most Valuable Player.

It was billed as a conflict of styles: Phoenix’s speed against Detroit’s muscle.
Phoenix had “Paul Ball,” the run-and-gun fast break offense taught by Paul Westhead, while Detroit played the hard-nosed, grind-it-out style taught by Bill Laimbeer.
The Shock were the proven team as their style had led them to two WNBA Championships, while the Mercury were the inexperienced group that was fun to watch. But could they win a title with that up-tempo style?
After all, everybody says defense wins championships and the game has to slow down in the Finals. The Mercury were out to prove those basketball cliches wrong in this series, and they did so with their 108-92 win over the Shock in Game 5 to clinch the 2007 WNBA Championship.

A drizzly night did not dampen the celebration for the host Seattle Sounders as they dominated in a 4-0 victory over the Atlanta Silverbacks in the USL First Division Championship with two goals from sub Greg Howes and several great saves from goalkeeper Chris Eylander. The Sounders now have the most titles in USL-1 history with four.
Seattle used two long-range tries, one directly off the kickoff and one that was put out by Atlanta goalkeeper Ryan McIntosh, to keep the Silverbacks honest early. But Atlanta rarely looked bothered.
The four-goal win was equal to the largest margin of victory in the history of the league, matching the four-goal decision by the Seattle Storm, no affiliation to the Sounders, in a 5-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes in the 1988 Western Soccer League championship, the first USL-1 title for the city of Seattle… The victory gave Seattle its fourth USL First Division Championship. The game was their third appearance in the final in the last four years… Alcaraz-Cuellar’s goal was his fourth of the season (second of the playoffs)… Sebastien Le Toux is the fourth player in Sounders history to win the USL-1 MVP honor.
