Toronto FC deals for Cunningham

Canadian Press

5/22/2007 8:34:41 PM

TORONTO (CP) - Toronto FC has acquired forward Jeff Cunningham from Real Salt Lake in exchange for forward Alecko Eskandarian and a first-round draft pick in 2008, the team announced Tuesday.

Cunningham has three goals this season and 93 career MLS goals, good for fourth on the league's all-time scoring list.

"We've been after Cunningham for a long time," head coach Mo Johnston said in a release. "For me, he's someone who has something different in this league. He has the pace of probably the fastest striker within the league in terms of being right up front. He can create goals out of nothing, and it was something different that we needed."

Cunningham, 30, broke into MLS with the Columbus Crew after being selected in the first round of the 1998 draft.

The Jamaican-born striker is playing his 10th MLS season. Cunningham scored a career best-tying 16 goals last year and was named an MVP finalist.

His 11 assists were second in the league last season and he was top 10 in a number of categories, including game-winning goals, multi-game goals and penalty-kick goals.

Eskandarian was acquired in December from D.C. United.

The five-foot-nine, 165-pound American has scored a goal in six games this season with Toronto FC. He has 21 goals and seven assists in 87 career MLS games.

"Listen, Alecko is a tremendous player, he'll score goals in this league," Johnston added.

"But when you look at someone like Cunningham, everyone pays a price, and unfortunately Alecko paid the price. Nine times out of 10 you'll keep Alecko, but for me it was something we had to do."

The Yanks are coming!

Definitely a questionable move. I was under the impression that Eskandarion was pretty good and an asset for TFC.

I hope RSL isn't looking for much out of the trade, though. Even if Eskandarion is pretty good, he's not going to change that team.
