The most unpredictable draft in MLL history took place last week at Stony Brook University. No one - and I mean NO ONE - picked Penn state midfielder Pat Heim as the first pick. People are still scratching their heads over Heim’s selection. Personally I had Heim going in the second round – so he WAS on the radar. In retrospect, the fact that the Chicago Machine picked Heim shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Head Coach Lelan Rogers absolutely loves two-way midfielders that can run. Heim fits that description better than any midfielder in the draft. He is an imposing physical force and immediately bolsters the Machine midfield on both ends. In terms of what the Machine was looking for (and needed) it was a good pick.

The question is – why would you take a guy that no one knows (mainstream fan/media speaking) with the first pick? The MLL draft may not be the media circus that other professional leagues are but the first pick will undoubtedly be showcased in more articles than this one. Uninformed lacrosse fans are comparing Heim’s selection to the Texans drafting Mario Williams instead of Reggie Bush in the 2006 NFL draft. A drastic comparison, to be sure – but they are making the comparison because Heim is not a “name “ player. He didn’t play on Memorial Day – ever – and is an honorable mention All-American Selection this year. Not on the first, second or third team – an honorable mention. Media-wise the best pick the Machine could have made at number one to fit both their media and player needs would have been Billy Looney. Maybe they were just saving that amazing four-team move for the number five pick for Looney, but something tells me Heim was not number one on every team’s draft list. He would have been there later in the first round. By picking Heim number one the Machine have heaped loads of pressure on the Nittany Lion to produce not only points – but highlight reels.

Wow...now I kinda wish I had gone to see some Penn State lax games this season...
