The Yanks are coming!

The Arena Football League is coming to Cleveland. Team owner JIM FERRARO received approval from the AFL Board of Directors at a meeting in Chicago last week to relocate his team from Las Vegas to Cleveland to play at the Quicken Loans Arena for the 2008 season.

Ferraro has also named former NFL quarterback and Ohio native BERNIE KOSAR to serve as part-owner, president and CEO of the franchise.

"We are excited to be bringing the fast-paced action of Arena Football to the city of Cleveland," said Ferraro. "We will have one of the best arenas in the League and Bernie is the perfect match to lead the charge."

"I have always believed that Cleveland would be a perfect market for Arena Football. I am honored to be a part of bringing a great product here and look forward to bringing an ArenaBowl championship to my hometown," said Kosar.

Hopefully the team can prosper in Cleveland. I'm sure the AFL will return to Vegas, though.

The Board Idiot

Interesting. I wonder why they left Vegas? Seems like with none of the big pro leagues there, it would be a great spot for an AFL team.

Well, the team hasn't really done all that well in Vegas, and it hasn't brought in the crowds there were hoping for (last season they moved to a 6000-seater arena). They claim that part of the problem is that the ownership group was not a local one - a local ownership group could better cater to the local sports community.

I think that's somewhat true. Two ArenaBowls have been held there with success, and the 2008 ArenaBowl will be there too. I think it's a prime place for an AFL team. Give it five years, and the AFL will be back in Vegas.

From ArenaFootball.com:

The Cleveland Arena Football League franchise announced today that the team will be called the “Cleveland Gladiators”. The team also introduced their new logo and its colors of red, black and silver.

The Gladiators, which announced its move to Northeast Ohio from Las Vegas in October, will kick off the 2008 season on Monday, March 3 against the New York Dragons at Quicken Loans Arena.

“It is an exciting day for Cleveland football,” said Gladiator part-owner, CEO and President Bernie Kosar. “The name ’Gladiators’ epitomizes what I felt like taking the field every Sunday. We have been building this the right way with a top quality coaching staff and players that will be proud to have "Cleveland" on their uniforms.”
