Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis has been pushing for coach Lane Kiffin to resign and is considering Dennis Green as a potential replacement, sources close to Kiffin and the team said.

Davis has gone so far as to draft a letter of resignation for Kiffin to sign, a source said. Kiffin has refused to do so but has dared Davis to fire him instead. The letter, the source said, was sent to Kiffin two weeks ago.

Kiffin, who was 4-12 in his first season as coach, has two years remaining on his contract at an estimated $2 million per year.

In the letter sent to Kiffin's legal representatives, Davis stated that only he would have control over his staff and full personnel decisions, sources said. According to a source close to Kiffin, Davis had promised Kiffin when he hired him that he would have more control over staff and personnel matters than recent Raiders coaches. Kiffin was allowed five offensive assistants and to name his own staff when he took the job after the 2006 season.

Al Davis, true to form. I don't know why he signs these guys to multi-year contracts; he's just going to get rid of them after a sucky season.

Well, we're into week two, and that means it's time to play this game once again.

The San Jose Mercury News is reporting that Davis intends to fire Kiffin tomorrow morning regardless of whether or not they win today's game. This is a different tact from earlier this year when Davis wanted Kiffin to resign, meaning Kiffin wouldn't be getting his paychecks. Now it appears that Davis is willing to eat that cost if it means he gets rid of the head coach that is "not the guy I hired". Kiffin has had little control over the team around him with Davis playing backseat driver for the Raiders.

The inevitable became reality Tuesday when Lane Kiffin was fired by Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis on Tuesday.

In a one-paragraph release, the team said "Lane Kiffin has been released as head coach of the Oakland Raiders for cause. "

Sources told ESPN that Kiffin was fired via the telephone and without pay.

Tom Cable, the team's offensive line coach, was emerging as the leading candidate to replace Kiffin, a source said. Cable was among three coaches interviewed by Davis on Monday night; the others were offensive coordinator Greg Knapp and special consultant Paul Hackett.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has not received a grievance from former Raiders coach Lane Kiffin in the wake of his bitter split with team owner Al Davis last week.

Davis said Tuesday that Kiffin was fired for cause, meaning the Raiders will not pay him for the remainder of the three-year deal worth about $6 million. Kiffin's agent, Gary Uberstine, said Kiffin will talk to the commissioner.

"No one ever likes to see a dispute like that happen," Goodell said. "Mr. Davis made it very clear he didn't like it. It was clear that coach Kiffin was uncomfortable under the current circumstances.

"It's something that's unfortunate. You don't want to see it happen."

Goodell expects a grievance to be filed, but added he would not intervene in the situation until he is asked to.
