Denison Cabral scored a hat trick and Carlos Garcia scored two goals on Saturday as the Baltimore Blast won their fourth Major Indoor Soccer League Championship, defeating La Raza de Monterrey 14-11 at the U.S. Cellular Arena.

The Blast captured championships in 2003, 2004 and 2006, and won five consecutive games in the 2008 postseason to lift the hardware again. Cabral, who concluded the playoffs with 21 points, was named the championship game MVP.

Baltimore turned the game in its favor with two goals 12 seconds apart in the third quarter. Garcia scored his second with 7:50 remaining, and then Cabral finished a feed from Lucio Gonzaga at the back post after Neto forced a turnover soon after Monterrey’s kickoff to make it 12-8.

Monterrey, in its first season in the MISL, got two goals and an assist from Byron Alvarez and some spectacular stops from rookie Jose Bontti that kept his team alive. LaRaza had eliminated Chicago and Detroit, both on golden goal tiebreakers, to reach the final.

I watched a Blast match on Maryland Public Television a few weeks ago. They were definitely a quality team and deserving of the championship. B)

From The Buffalo News:

The long wait ended in Bandit Land on Saturday night. The Buffalo Bandits survived an early injury to All-Star defenseman Chris White, then leaned on goaltender Mike Thompson down the stretch to win their first National Lacrosse League Champion's Cup since 1996 with a thrilling 14-13 victory over the Portland LumberJax before a raucous, orange-clad, sellout crowd of 18,690 at HSBC Arena.

Game Most Valuable Player Mark Steenhuis had five goals and an assist, Kevin Dostie scored three times and Thompson made a save he'll remember for the rest of his life right before the final horn Ñ his 39th of the night and the one that secured the fourth championship in the franchise's 17-year history.

"They had a great opportunity and Mike stopped it," said Darris Kilgour, who joined fellow Hall of Famers Les Bartley and Tony Resch as the only coaches in NLL history with 10 postseason victories. "That's the one everybody will remember but Mikey made just so many big saves for us all night long."

Portland gained a final possession with 20.8 seconds left and Peter Morgan's shot with less than 10 seconds remaining missed the net, but the Jax got the rebound and 18-year-old Peter Jacobs found the ball in his web as the seconds ticked away. Thompson went down to smother Jacobs' unobstructed shot from about 15 feet and his happy Bandits teammates came pouring off the bench, over the boards and on to the floor.

The Philadelphia Soul captured Virgin Mobile ArenaBowl XXII this afternoon, knocking off the San Jose SaberCats, 59-56, in front of a sold-out crowd of 17,244 at New Orleans Arena. The victory gave Philadelphia its first title in franchise history and denied San Jose its second straight ArenaBowl championship.

Soul quarterback Matt D’Orazio (Columbus, Ohio) completed 26 of 43 pass attempts for 302 yards and seven touchdowns and rushing for one score to be named Mitsubishi Motors ArenaBowl XXII MVP. Meanwhile, Philadelphia receiver Chris Jackson (Santa Ana, Calif.) was named the Offensive Player of the Game after totaling 11 catches for a game-high 146 yards and three touchdowns.

The SaberCats, who were looking to earn their fourth championship in seven seasons, had several opportunities catch up to the Soul, who posted an AFL-best 13-3 regular-season record. But early mistakes and turnovers allowed Philadelphia to jump out to a 19-point third-quarter advantage it would not relinquish.

The SaberCats refused to go out quietly. Wright narrowed the lead to 11 points with his 13th catch of the night, an ArenaBowl record. San Jose’s Trestin George (Berkeley, Calif.) then recovered an onside kick, setting up Geathers’ fifth touchdown grab of the night and bringing the SaberCats within a field goal. The miracle comeback came up short, however, as Philadelphia’s Rod Davis (Gulfport, Miss.) recovered the final onside kick of the night.

With trips back to Africa slated for both Sallieu Bundu and Musa Otieno of Cleveland, it could have been easy for the pair to be distracted Saturday night at Krenzler Stadium. Instead, the duo played pivotal roles in the second-year City Stars winning the USL Second Division Championship 2-1 against the two-time champion Charlotte Eagles.

Otieno kisses cup before returning to South Africa (Mike Wise)In a game that looked destined on paper to be a defensive battle with neither side scoring more than once in any of their four previous meetings, there were plenty of offensive opportunities in the thrilling finale.

The opening goal came by unusual circumstances 15 minutes in for the hosts. Schulte sent a long throw-in inside the box, finding Musa Otieno eight yards from goal. Otieno just missed connecting with a header, but his large frame left Charlotte defender Steve Shak screened from seeing the well-paced ball as it deflected off the defenseless veteran and found its way into the back of the net for an own goal.

The reigning two-time USL Second Division Defender of the Year Mark Schulte was honored as the Championship MVP for his efforts in shutting down Swinehart for the majority of the match en route to the victory.

The championship celebration will be cut short for Bundu and Otieno, who are headed back to Africa.

Hawaii's coaches lay sprawled on the field as their happy players trotted around showing off their new championship banner.

Winning the Little League World Series can be exhausting.

Tanner Tokunaga hit two homers, Iolana Akau added a solo blast and Waipahu, Hawaii, took advantage of several miscues by Matamoros, Mexico, in 12-3 victory Sunday that sealed the fourth straight Little League title for the United States.

Caleb Duhay and his Waipahu teammates secured Hawaii's first LLWS title since 2005.

"I know I'm tired," manager Timo Donahue said. "I'll probably catch up on a lot of sleep the next few days."

His pint-sized players wore out Mexico, too. It was just the second time in series history that a team scored in each inning in the title game, with the 1974 team from Taiwan the only other squad to accomplish the feat.

The Tennessee Valley Vipers defeated the Spokane Shock, 56-55, in overtime to claim the 2008 ArenaCup Championship in front of a record-crowd of 10,662 at Spokane Arena in Spokane Wash. This is the Vipers first-ever ArenaCup title in eight af2 seasons.

Leading the Vipers (14-6) to the shocking victory was QB Tony Colston, who was pressed into duty for normal starter Kevin Eakin. Eakin injured his ankle on a 5-yard TD pass to WR Alonzo Nix on the very first drive of the game. Colston, who threw only four passes in two appearances during the regular season, threw seven touchdown passes on the night without an interception to earn Schutt Offensive Player of the Game honors. He finished with 20 completions on 30 attempts for 288 yards.

After an intense four quarters of play that ended in a 48-48 tie, the Shock got the ball first and took a 55-48 lead on a Kelvin Dickens’ 25-yard TD catch from QB Nick Davila. Colston and the Vipers then responded with a drive that culminated with a 24-yard Nix TD grab that brought the team within one point, 55-54. After a timeout to think things over, Tennessee Valley Head Coach Dean Cokinos decided to go for a two-point conversion attempt to decide the game. His decision paid off. As Colston dropped back to pass he couldn’t find an open receiver and decided to tuck the ball and run for it. After eluding a Spokane defender at the 2-yard line, Colston dove into the end zone for the game-winning two-point conversion.

he fantastic journey for the Chicago Bandits came to a magical end on Sunday evening in Kimberly, Wis. as they defeated the Washington Glory by a final score of 6-4 to win the 2008 NPF Championship Series and Cowles Cup Trophy.

The win for the Bandits was their 15th straight and third in the row during the playoffs. At the midway point of the regular season the Bandits were 12-12 and in fourth place, but they went on to win 20 of 24 regular season games to win the regular season crown. They continued the “refuse to lose” mentality in the playoffs by going 3-0.

Jessica Sallinger came in to relieve Thorson in the top of the seventh inning to record the save. Sallinger was a part of all three games for the Bandits, as she was earned the win in games one and two and then the save in game three.

Any doubts Charles Gbeke had over the trade that saw him come to the Vancouver Whitecaps from the Montreal Impact disappeared in a champagne-soaked celebration Sunday night.

Gbeke headed in two second-half goals, the second coming in the 73rd minute, as the Whitecaps defeated the Puerto Rico Islanders 2-1 to win their second United Soccer Leagues First Division championship in three years to thrill a hometown crowd.

"Those are the two biggest goals in my career," Gbeke shouted over the cheers and singing of a crowd of 5,822 at Swangard Stadium. "It's great for us. This championship is big for us."

The Whitecaps acquired Gbeke in a trade from Montreal in July. The Ivory Coast native, who grew up in Montreal, admitted the deal caught him off guard.

"I didn't expect to get traded," said Gbeke, who was named player of the game. "I had my family in Montreal, I grew up in Montreal. I told my dad when I got traded playing with (forward) Eddie Sebrango is going to bring a lot to my game. That's what happened here."

At at six-foot-two and 210-pounds, Gbeke is built like a football linebacker. He used his size and strength on both goals.

He snapped a 1-1 tie late in the game when he leaped in the air and headed in a cross from midfielder Justin Moose. That goal came 18 minutes after Islanders midfielder Sandy Gbandi took a pass from Noah Delgado and headed it past Whitecaps goalkeeper Jay Nolly.

Wow...I was really expecting Puerto Rico to win given how they've been rolling through the Champions League.
