The Yanks are coming!

From Fox Sports:

Big Brown won the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, living up to his status as the pre-race favorite.

Filly Eight Belles was second, but she broke down as the 20-horse field galloped out past the finish line.

She was later euthanized on the track.

Denis of Cork took third. Tale of Ekati was fourth.

Wow. That's pretty sad. :(

Congrats to Big Brown though. I don't think he'll win the Triple Crown, though when one hasn't been won in 30 years that's a pretty easy statement to make. It would be cool to see happen though.

From ESPN:

Eight Belles will be interred at the Kentucky Derby Museum, near the grave sites of four Kentucky Derby winners.

The 3-year-old filly broke two ankles after finishing second to Big Brown in the Kentucky Derby on May 3. She was euthanized on the track.

The track said Tuesday it will plant a tree in honor of Eight Belles and her remains will be buried at its base. The memorial is planned for the museum's courtyard, with the date still to be set.

And so Big Brown shockingly does not win the Belmont. Eventually near the end of the race, Big Brown's jockey eased up on Big Brown and made sure he didn't hurt the horse.

Heh...I don't know what the problem was. We all know Big Brown had a problem in his hoof. But I also heard that in the previous two races Big Brown was on steroids (which is legal in horse racing up until next year), and for some reason, perhaps a bit too cocky, they didn't give Big Brown his injections recently because they felt he would win anyways. Now I'm not supporting steroids but it's legal in horse racing, so I imagine there's a good number of horses that use them. But that's my limited horse racing knowledge.

Indeed. I think he could've gotten a mediocre finish...but the jockey purposely slowed down near the end to save the horse from any injury. This horse is extremely expensive and word is that he'll never race again.

See, from all we've heard, I have the feeling that there was more going on that we don't know about. Something dirty in the training, the steroids...something that made this horse what it is.

Congress is set to investigate horse racing this month, and I hope that they put an end to the steroids.

Now they're talking about the not-taking-steroids issue on tv.
Also, my bad, they plan to race Big Brown in another race or two, but after that I believe they plan to retire him. Although, if there's an injury, I can see them canceling anymore races.

From what I understand, steroids for horse racing are illegal in some states, but not the states that host the TC races. My feeling is that it was the hoof that caused this loss. Not so much today, but the training before hand. It's a long race, and if the horse isn't ready for it, it's not going to win.
