Former Arizona Sting players - including three-time All-Star Dan Dawson - were permanently released from the Sting in the National Lacrosse League's 2008 dispersal draft Monday.

The Sting, an indoor lacrosse team owned by the National Hockey League's Phoenix Coyotes and based in Jobing.com Arena, are for sale after being inactive since last year.

The franchise accepted the option to remain dormant and loan out players in 2008 after the NLL struggled to reach a collective bargaining agreement.

But Sting executives notified the league June 2 that they would not return for the 2009 season, according to George Daniel, NLL deputy commissioner and CEO.

Daniel said the Sting's average attendance of 6,000 fans ranked near the bottom of the league. He said the operating budget likely was hurt by the Coyotes' estimated $24 million deficit.
