AFL 2009 Expansion Plans; League Plans On Two More

In the wake of Arena Football League commissioner David Baker naming South Florida an appealing market for an expansion team, it appears the region is a long shot to be added for the 2009 season.

The league, which has 17 teams, is expected to complete expansion plans for next season by the end of the summer. In addition to South Florida, the league is exploring the possibility of adding teams in Boston and Pittsburgh. The league likely will not add more than two expansion teams.

''The AFL continues to be very interested in South Florida as a potential expansion market,'' said Chris McCloskey, executive vice president of communications for the league. ``We believe it will be a great AFL market. We have had discussions with potential ownership groups in the recent past. There is nothing imminent, however.''

The biggest hurdle is finding an ownership group. To join the league, the owner must pay a $20 million expansion fee. The league has had discussions with potential owners but the issue apparently has been meeting the financial requirement.

I would be absolutely freaking excited if Boston got a team. B) And with a new arena in the works for Pittsburgh, I think it's time to return to one of the two remaining original cities without a team.
