The Yanks are coming!

From the San Francisco Chronicle:

A judge cleared the way Thursday for a November vote on whether to build a platform over a cargo terminal — a site that could hold hotels or a new stadium for the San Diego Chargers.

San Diego County Superior Court Judge Ronald Styn declined to remove the measure from the ballot after the Port District filed a lawsuit to stop it. Styn said he could find no compelling reason to remove the measure.

The Port District contends the plan to allow a stadium or hotel on a 40-foot deck could jeopardize 42,000 jobs and hurt an $8 billion economy that flows from the terminal to the city.

Port officials said they plan to appeal the judge's ruling.

Faced with the prospect of losing the San Diego Chargers (NFL) to a suburb, residents are paying close attention to this fall's race for city attorney, where incumbent Michael Aguirre faces a challenge from Jan Goldsmith -- with the treatment of the Chargers a main issue.

More than anyone else, Aguirre has been responsible for the Chargers looking outside San Diego for a new stadium: his dogged opposition to any form of public funding or financing for a new facility has made him either a hero or scourge, depending on your viewpoint. But considering how financially successful the construction of a new San Diego Padres ballpark was for everyone involved -- it revitalized a moribund part of the city and spurred billions in invesrment -- some in the business community find Aguirre's passtionate opposition to the Chargers a little over the top, a political spat made personal.

So it's not surprising the treatment of the Chargers is a centerpiece of his reelection bid. In a debate between the candidates last night, Aguirre acknowledged his stance regarding the Chargers was not popular, but the right thing to do: when the city has problems paying for basic services (which is a debatable claim), it's folly to spend money on a professional sports team. He also hinted the Republican Goldsmith was running as a front for the Chargers.
