The Yanks are coming!

And -1s all around.

Kickoff!
Last week saw a slew of injuries to NFL players, probably the biggest of which was to Tom Brady. But one injury seemed to have gone mostly overlooked until Tuesday. Vince Young was booed during the Titans home opener and was injured in that game. He was reported to having to miss two to four weeks to recover. On Tuesday, a report came out that Young's family had called Titans coach Jeff Fisher out of concern for the QB. Young had apparently left his home in an upset state and left behind his cell phone, leaving no way to be contacted. Fisher called the police, who began to look for the star QB, but he eventually turned up unharmed, claiming to have just gone over to watch Monday Night Football with a friend. Now we are hearing reports that Young owns a gun and has talked about suicide to a therapist, leading some to wonder about his mental state and if continued booing at home could push him over the edge. Add into this the story from earlier this year that he had thought about retiring so early in his career.

Now, you all have heard as much as I have. We've got conflicting reports of what happened and who said what, and there are denials of the suicide story. What do you folks make of all this? Do you think that fan reactions could be detrimental to Young's state of mind? Do you think this incident and the retirement report could be in some way linked? Other thoughts?

Due time: 8:00 PM EDT on Monday, September 15
Next week: ATI will be on break. Look for Week 17 info soon.

What do I make of this? I don't know. I just sympathize for Young and his family. Yes the booing definitely affected Young. He's had success throughout his career and I don't think he's ever been booed by his home team's town. I think this could all be linked. It is possible he doesn't want to play football, or perhaps it's because of all the pressure. He's obviously not mentally strong. I just hope he heals and we'll see if he'll return as the starter. I have a feeling Collins will do a good enough job, and that the only thing keeping Young from returning as the starter when he's healthy is his state of mind.

There is some sort of misunderstanding or protection going on in Tennessee. Either way, it doesn't sound good at all. Part of it may be that he had so much success in college...winning the Rose Bowl and National Championship on back to back seasons, that he isn't used to struggles, and the reactions from them. Also, he said that this is the worst injury he's had in his football career, so that has to be taking some toll on him as well. The link may be that the NFL is much more difficult than Young expected, and include the disappointment of the injury and that does make things a bit harder this year.

Suicide is one of those things that you just don't make up, either as a patient or as the therapist...so something is going on there. The injuries and booing are definitely getting to him, but if he's going continue to be a player in the NFL, he has to toughen up a bit, as these things will happen to every player. It does appear that in both instances he wants to get away from the game, and maybe with these weeks off he'll be able to get his head back into the game. The Titans are doing alright without him for now, so he can take as long as he needs, with or without injury. He has the capability of being one of the better, and more exciting, quarterbacks in the league, and it would be a shame to not see him continue to play at such a young age.

Clearly there is something to be worried about, even if they're downplaying the incident. If there was nothing to worry about, his family wouldn't have called Fisher. And if there was nothing to worry about, then Fisher wouldn't have called the police. He denies it because...well, you usually aren't going to admit to such things. He has been injured and booed at home, which is apparently tough for him to deal with. I would not be at all shocked to find out that this and the report of retirement are indeed linked. If he wants to get out, retirement would be one way of doing it.

Breaking news: Tom Brady is out for the season! Well, for as often as we've heard that in the past week, you'd think it just broke five minutes ago. Well, Tom Brady was still out for the season during Sunday's game against Brett Favre and the J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets!. The Patriots started long-time backup Matt Cassel in his place. Cassel hadn't started a football game since high school, and just about the entire sporting world wrote off the Pats, declared the Jets a winner, and thought the season over for the Pats.

Well, Pats fans have just one thing to say to the sports world: SUCK IT, MORONS!

...or is that just me?

Anyway, Matt Cassel's first start almost mirrored Tom Brady's in terms of touchdown passes, pass attempts, completions, interceptions, et al. The rest of the team stepped up around Cassel to produce a win over Gang Greeny, and the Pats are now 2-0 with both games essentially without Brady.

Buy or sell Bill Belichick's decision not to sign another quarterback to the roster (aside from Matt Gutierrez, who had already been part of the Patriots organization over the past year).

Buy. This is just like their first Super Bowl year when Brady was put in for an injured Bledsoe, the only difference is that Brady did start games at Michigan. However, when you have a quarterback that knows the system and can step in and win, like Cassel did in week 1, there isn't a reason to look for another quarterback. Have him manage the game under the system, and that's a lot better than having a different quarterback come in and learn a new system which would take weeks of growing pains.

Sell. There's no guarantee Cassell will be great (one game is just one game, Matt Ryan was alright in one game, not his second), there's not guarantee he won't get hurt. I say sign a veteran backup, have him be the backup for the rest of the season with him only playing when Cassell is out. You've got to have an insurance policy, right now, Gutierrez isn't one. Gutierrez may know the system but having a backup that has played in NFL games more than Gutierrez would be smart.

Buy. While there is no guarantee that Cassel will be great, as Cougar pointed out, there isn't a guarantee that a veteran will work out under the Patriots' system either. Use who you have who know the system. Things look great so far in Green Bay too, they didn't have to go elsewhere either, even though there is no guarantee Rodgers is the right guy. You just have to go on your gut, and with the success the Patriots have had this decade, who am I to say they should do things differently?
