As the Falcons embark on an unexpected playoff run, a developer is looking at whether the site of the old GM plant in Doraville could someday be the team’s new home.

Sembler Co. of Florida is negotiating to buy the 165-acre site from GM and has floated plans to use 90 acres of the site for a $1 billion new stadium for the football team, according to city officials.

“It is a possibility, but we don’t know yet what it will be,” said Doraville Mayor Ray Jenkins. “It’s an excellent spot for anything.”

GM will only confirm that it is talking to one finalist from four companies that bid to buy the factory site. But Jenkins wrote a memo to the Doraville City Council in September, after introductory meetings with the four firms.

Although details were vague, the memo said Sembler’s offers were for a mixed-use project alone or a mixed-use project alongside a retractable-roof stadium for the Falcons. It acknowledged that the team’s lease with the Georgia Dome runs until 2020.
