The Sacramento Monarchs unexpectedly folded today. The team was a WNBA pioneer and the only basketball champions to rule Arco Arena.

Concerns for the Kings hastened the collapse, said team owner Joe Maloof.

"We love the Monarchs, but it's time to re-focus," Maloof said. "Everyone in this business environment ... you have to do what has to be done. Our focus is to turn the Kings around, and to do that, we have to put all our efforts and good salespeople on the Kings."

The announcement by Maloof Sports and Entertainment put the league office into overdrive to find the franchise a new home and owner, most likely in the Bay Area.
