This article makes me wonder how illegitimate All Star teams are. I know we need fan voting but seriously can a guy make an all-star team by not playing? By the time the game rolls around, McGrady will probably have played a game by then but how many 20ish? This isn't just NBA related by all major sports league related...because I know the same does happen in the MLB, NHL, etc. |

I often think that all-star voting is less of an all-star voting and more of a popularity contest. Brett Favre had an okay season last year, but everyone voted for him to be in the Pro Bowl. There was a chance this year that Manny Ramirez would make the All-Star Game despite missing 50 games for steroids. And in the NHL All-Star Game, the two teams featured a starting lineup of exactly four teams: Montreal (4) and Pittsburgh (2) in the East and San Jose (3) and Chicago (3) in the West. Canadiens fans essentially stuffed the ballot boxes for their players. The ability to vote x times per day (ten in Major League Soccer!) every day from the opening to closing of the ballots is ridiculous. I don't think fan votes should be eliminated entirely, but they should be weighted less. |

All Star games are glorified exhibition games meant for the fans. So, I have no problem with fans voting who they want to see in the game. I actually enjoy the events around the game like home run derby, slam dunk contest, etc, more than I do the given all star game itself. |

You raise an interesting point. If the game is meant for the fans, and so many fans complain about either the quality of play, the players that get it, or the fact that players are forced to play a meaningless game, does that mean that the All-Star concept is dwindling in popularity? The Pro Bowl has struggled to gain a following, especially in recent years; the MLB All-Star tie and the constant rotation of players (not to mention the constant complaints of the risk of injury) has been highlighted lately. Basically, there seems to be a growing contingent that thinks that the All-Star games are not worth the time, effort, and money. |

Well, as long as the seats are filled and the games are getting decent ratings, then they're fine. The only one that I can think of that doesn't fit that is the Pro Bowl. That likely has to do more with it being after the Super Bowl in Hawaii (and not having any other events with it) than anything else. By having it before the Super Bowl at the SB site, that may help it out as it's now more with the festivities surrounding the championship game than it had been in recent years. |
