I've got a good feeling about this World Cup.

Translation: Expect the US to go out in the first round.

By the way, espn.com has a couple of World Cup contests going that feature some nice prizes.

Soccer Pickem includes all 64 matches. Pick the outcome of each, including the consolation. The 48 group stage matches include draw as an option, while the 16 knock outs will have just the 2 teams as choices. Each pick is due before the start of the respective match. One entry per person. Grand Prize Winner gets a $1,500 Best Buy gift card. Also, one prize is given out each day: an official team jersey.

Bracket Predictor is a little more complex. First, select the two teams that will advance from each group, including which team is first place and which is second. From there, select the winning teams of each match up, all the way to the World Cup champion. The consolation is not a part of the contest. Picks are due before the start of the World Cup. Five entries per person. Grand prize is $5,000 cash. Random drawing for an official team jersey also is a prize.

Damn. I might have to enter those. I thought about it, decided not to bother, but I had never actually checked out the prizes. Cool.

In what I'm calling my main bracket, I have Spain winning it all, which would be their first World Cup title.

By the way, here are some facts that I found interesting:

  • The host nation has advanced to at least the 2nd round in every World Cup.
  • The only World Cup champion not to win at least one title at home is Brazil.
  • Repeat champions have happened twice: Italy in 1934 and 1938 and Brazil in 1958 and 1962.
  • 76 nations have played in at least one World Cup. Brazil is the only nation that has played in each World Cup.
  • Europe and South America have each won 9 World Cup titles. The other continents combined have won none.
  • No European nation has won a World Cup title outside of Europe.

Day one ends with all four Group A teams tied at one point apiece. Host South Africa kicked off the tournament and scored the first goal against Mexico, but El Tri had a goal of their own to force the 1-1 draw. Uruguay and France went at it this afternoon and ended in a 0-0 draw and 10 men for Uruguay. France did not look good and left stars Henry and Malouda on the bench to start the game. And in an ironic turn, an Henry shot took a deflection off the arm on an Uruguayan defender. Henry pleaded for a handball call (would have resulted in a red card on the defender and a PK, since it would have denied a scoring opportunity), but the ref rightly did not call a handball on the player who had drawn his arms back against his body before being hit by the ball, meaning that there was no illegal contact.
