There have always been legends and folk tales of those things that lurk outside of human understanding. Creatures that walk amongst us, indistinguishable from our kind but beneath the surface devoid of anything recognisably human. Monsters that live in the shadowy parts of our world, hiding from prying eyes and carrying out their diabolical schemes. Whatever they are we are taught from a young age to fear them and in time this turns to an innate hatred. Throughout history there have been those who rose from the ranks of humanity to answer this perceived threat. Heroes of mankind who pushed back the darkness and made life safe for normal people to get on with their day to day lives in ignorant bliss. In time they themselves became legends, no more believed to be real than the monsters they fought. In truth both these things in fact existed. Monster and hero in eternal battle to see their own view of the world realised in fact. Although the monsters never really stood a chance, as for all their supernatural powers the were outnumbered. As is their way mankind tolerated these different forms of life so long as they could be controlled and made safe. Over time man dictated how these monsters should live their lives and punished any deviation with brutal efficiency. Neutering these once powerful creatures, humanity watched over them like prison wardens and slowly tamed that which they had feared. Now most people know nothing of these supernatural beings that live hidden amongst them, the task of controlling them now handled by a chosen few. So in this modern world the monsters are now called parahumans, just another anomaly for science to investigate. Tolerated to exist within guidelines set down by a governmental department established to monitor and control parahuman activity. But what is life like for these people? Are they even people at all? |
