It was a cold, cold morning. Danny felt like an idiot for not grabbing a jacket before he ran off. But, he shrugged, what could be done for it now? He’d only had enough money left in his pockets for a ticket. In the end, he figured, it wouldn’t even matter. When he reached his destination, he’d find something.

Fog rolled in off of the lake as he stood at the end of the pier, gazing out at the icy waters. Even straining his eyes as much as he was now, he still could not see across the famed Crystal Lake. ‘Doesn’t look like crystal to me,’ he mumbled in the voice of someone who’d been greatly betrayed. The boy could not, for the life of him, understand why it was referred to by the name that it was. It was rather green, as could be expected from a large body of standing water; but more than that, it was impossible to see more than three inches beneath the surface of said lake.

The blonde glanced nervously up at the clock mounted on the outside wall of a nearby boathouse. He shivered. The ferry was ten minutes late already.

The decision to leave had been a sporadic one this morning, and he wasn’t quite sure what he thought of it yet. The reasoning behind it seemed lacking, but who needed logic this early in the morning? He hadn’t been to Yino in years. It wasn’t as if he were at the other docks across town- the ones that sailed for Alish. He was just going across the lake… to his house. It was somewhat awkward to refer to Yino as his home. He’d never really thought of it that way- it had never been hospitable to him. Danny shook his head. That wasn’t quite fair: Yino itself had never done anything to him. It was more… the people in Yino that had done him wrong. And really, most of them hadn’t been that bad. It was just… his house.

The ferry finally pulled into the dock, and Danny sighed visibly, ready to welcome the warmth he hoped the cabin would provide. The ticket master extended his hand for Danny’s ticket.

So why was he returning to it? Because his parents lived there. Parents, by all definitions, are supposed to be caretakers. That had never really taken place in his house, however. He supposed it wasn’t really their faults: more his own. The reason why he of all people should be at fault completely escaped him, but he was sure that at some point he’d come up with one. He didn’t really want to blame his parents. Parents, after all, were supposed to be obeyed and looked up to. He had obeyed his parents at one point. That was how he ended up with Toni. He thought that maybe, just maybe, they might be ready to see him again. Then again, by all definitions, the two people who’d come together to give him life had never really been parents.

‘It’s all kind of misleading, isn’t it?’ whispered the blonde as he handed over his ticket and made a beeline for the warmly-lit cabin.

The ticket master scratched his head and readjusted his cap, staring after the shivering, blue teenager. He pulled a face as the ferry pulled away from the docks, that being the last passenger. They were a good deal out when one last kid came flying out to the end of the pier, shouting his head off. The ticket master sighed and shook his head. ‘Crazy kids…’

Vincent rubbed his arms furiously against the cold. He gave the ticket guy his ticket and filed on board with the rest of the people.

It's too early to be alive... Vincent thought miserably. He wrapped his cape around him, though it too was cold, having accidentally been left outside to dry, as his mother said, however freezing rain had fallen that night.

Vincent stared dully at his feet until he arrived at the cabin and warmth spread through him. He looked around and somehow got shoved into the corner by a very annoyed person attempting to get some coffee. Vincent was supposed to meet his friends. He had no idea that this was an elaborate prank. On him.

Vincent spotted some very familiar looking hair. He kept his eye on it around everyone. As Vincent got closer, he could see that this person wasn't wearing anything more than a t-shirt and looked quite chilly. After one trip and an elbow in the gut later, Vincent found the person and wrapping his arms around the waist of the person who he thought was his friend.

Vincent's heart stopped for a moment. Something was wrong...

"Holy crap! I'm so sorry! I thought you were someone else!" Vincent flung himself against the wall and melted to the floor in embarrasment.

ooc: ...so anyway, if you couldn't tell the person Vincent hugged is Danny.

The unexpected hug jolted Danny out of his not-so-peaceful reverie. He blinked down at the person squeezing his organs with a quizzical expression on his face. Were they trying to escape the crowd? Danny could understand that perfectly well. However, he didn’t quite see why they needed to be… so close.

Until they spoke. And it dawned on him. Quite characteristically, the blonde flushed bright red. The color in his face rose and spread to his ears and neck as he realized that black-haired teen was, in fact, male. He attempted not to assume anything about the guy, but it was becoming increasingly more difficult since the encounter with his cousin’s latest squeeze. After a needless awkward silence, the effeminate teen finally brought himself to speak. ‘… It’s, um, it’s all right.’ Speak he could- and would- but make eye contact? Not just yet, sorry. Try again later.

He fidgeted in his secluded corner seat and twiddled his thumbs, wondering if the person would introduce themselves or just walk away, like most normal people would. At least, most normal people in his life. He considered Steve Fair, his best friend, anything but normal. Something inside him, however, secretly hoped that the stranger would stick around, if just for the ferry ride. Danny was starting to feel awfully small and alone.

||OoC: Sorry it took so long. ^^; Hope it's okay...?||

Vincent couldn't bring himself to look the blonde in the eyes, but he did see that the guy was blushing, and was indeed male. Vincent stood up, let his cape fall around him, but not close becuase he was cold anymore, and instantly moved on.

"Hi, I'm Vincent duPont and I was wondering if you've seen any other teenagers around? One has red hair, one blonde, kinda like yours, and one has flourescent green hair...They were supposed to meet me here..." Vincent said, wanting to talk to someone. He started looking around and his heart twisted when he realized they weren't there. They ditched him.

Vincent felt much worse than before. First his boyfriend ditched him, then his parents, now his friends.

'Well then no one would really miss you if you never came back...' Vincent thought spitefully, jumping to an extreme conclusion.

The blonde’s shoulders sagged and his eyes grew sad as he realized that this friendly stranger- no, Vincent- had been duped. Not only had he not seen any other teenagers on board, but- who in the world would ask their friend to meet them on a six o’clock ferry to a remote and relatively boring little town? In a sad little voice, he replied, ‘No… I’m really sorry…’ The boy glanced up at Vincent, just long enough to catch a rather spiteful look cross his face, and immediately looked away, misreading the facial expression as being directed towards him as opposed to an inward issue.

I’m just screwing everything up today, he thought pathetically. Maybe things would get better in Yino? Somehow he doubted it, but the optimist in him wouldn’t let the possibility go. As long as there was a glimmer of hope on the horizon… Danny is a firm believer in the idea that one can change their lot in life out of sheer will, as has been established. Why couldn’t he make this ferry ride work for him? He set his jaw and sat up a little straighter, prepared to have a conversation and possibly make a new friend.

To start off, he retreated further into his corner, making room on the seat next to him. ‘Would you, um, like to sit down?’ Suddenly he felt kind of stupid.

Vincent smiled pleasently again, slightly amused at the blonde's awkwardness.

"Yeah, thanks. So what are you going to Yino for?" Vincent asked out right.

He never really thought about why he talked, maybe just for the comfort of knowing someone is listening. Someone stepped on his foot but he pretended to ignore it. Vincent also heard the truth in the teen's words and could tell that he really felt bad for Vincent and his little predicament. Vincent shrugged and made sure the money was still in his pocket.

Maybe if I don't return by tonight, they'll realize what they've lost. Vincent thought half-heartedly.

O, damn.

He should have figured Vincent would ask that question. It was only natural, right? Danny melted into himself, just a little bit. He hadn’t thought very far into his reasoning- he almost didn’t want to know. But what was a plausible excuse? ‘Family,’ he murmured meekly. In so far as they could be called that. Maybe, he thought without much hope, maybe that was why. And then he could just go see them and make sure they weren’t dying of cancer and then he’d go back home. If Shime was still home at that point.

The boy stared at his hands in his lap. Perhaps this had been a bad idea? What if Toni wouldn’t let him come back? Then he’d have a real problem on his hands, one that he wasn’t prepared to deal with. I’m probably not even capable of living on my own, he thought uselessly. Which was a complete lie, seeing as his cousin did not support him in the least bit, but Danny wasn’t about to be convinced of that right then and there. The ferry lurched as it progressed out into deeper, murkier, and most of all choppier waters. Danny managed another glance at Vincent’s face. ‘I hope you don’t get sea-sick.’ How cute: he’s concerned.

"Don't worry, I don't. If I did, I'd force myself to be outside." It took Vincent a moment to register the blonde's reason for going, having barely heard it. "That's nice, do you visit them often?" He asked, by now realizing the blonde wasn't the open talkative type.

Vincent reflected back on his family, it had always been him and his parents. He didn't even have a pet. He remembered one time he tried to keep a snake, but his fater let it loose and blamed Vincent for being careless.

In response, Danny let out a poorly concealed sigh of relief. He wasn’t looking forward to having someone get sick on him- or even keeping company a guy green in the face. Not that he made very good company in the first place… But still, he tried, and that was what mattered…right?

The boy hadn’t quite yet picked up on the fact that Vincent was trying to get him to open up and be a little more conversational, but he continued to allow himself to be led on by open-ended questions. ‘Um, no,’ he stammered at last, raising his head and shifting to stare out the window as he prepared to make eye-contact. It wasn’t every day he did this sort of thing, you know? Not particularly thinking about what he was saying, young Master Guzman tilted his head into the window and closed his eyes, shivering as the chill from the glass passed through his skull and down his spine.

‘No, not really. A-Actually, I’ve never visited them b-before.’ Let’s see how long it takes for him to realize his teeth are chattering.

"A first time adventure then? Fun," Vincent rested his head against the wall behind him. He was starting to feel tired again. "Are you alone, or just tring to escape from your parents?" Vincent looked around for something to warm himself up with but found nothing. He contentedly sat in his little chair, ignoring the people stepping on his feet and falling onto him when the boat lurched.

Yea, first time. Danny sat in awkward silence once more, until his new companion’s latest question. At first he misinterpreted the question. With a shrug, he replied, ‘No, actually, I’m going to see them…’ And then he realized what Vincent was asking. The teenager wanted to know if he was traveling alone, or if his parents were here somewhere. He felt like an idiot, and sat up laughing softly at himself. Oops. ‘I-I mean, um, ha… Yea, I’m alone.’ Although, he figured, he’d pretty much already answered that question. Not that he considered them parents.

"Oh, really?" Vincent was genuinly taken aback. He had always assumed that everyone lived with two parents and that was that. He shrugged and suddenly remembered he had two hand warmer-things in his back pocket. He pulled them out and opened one for himself and offered one to the blonde next to him. "Want one? They'll warm you up." Vincent set one on his right for arm and after a minute he shifted it to his left forearm.

‘Mm-hmm,’ was the blonde’s response. Still not quite aware of what he was saying, simply dog tired, he went on, ‘I’ve been living with my cousin cause they told me to go away but I think they might want to see me again.’ The words spilt forth like a faucet- it wasn’t until Vincent offered something to him that he managed to shut them off. Surprised, Danny took the hand-warmer in silence. It was already warm from being sat on, but when he opened it up, the heat was amazing. His chilled, blue fingers basked in the warmth for minute. ‘Thankyou,’ he finally remembered, spluttering out the two words as if they were one.

After a minute or so of embarrassed quiet, Danny took initiative for once in his life. ‘What’re you going to do in Yino?’

"Well, I was going to go camping with some friends," Vincent started spitefully. "But," He turned cheery again. "I think I'll just start my own business or something, get away from a bit of monotony."

Vincent tossed his own hand-warmer into the air and caught it on his forehead. He kept it there and stared at the ceiling, attempting to find a question that wouldn't cross the line of personal and conversational. Finding none, he went out on a limb. "If you need some help finding your way around, I've been here before and know the place really well."

Watching Vincent’s balancing act kept Danny happily occupied, for the most part. A pang of sympathy and, at the same time understanding ran through him, though, after the black-haired teenager spoke. It was more due to his tone of voice and his implied situation than anything else. However, he admired Vincent’s optimism- if that was what it was. Even if it was denial, simple and plain- well, he wished he had half of it.

He blinked out of his trance-like state. Once again, he laughed. At that moment, Danny suddenly realized that he was actually comfortable with Vincent, far above and beyond the comfort he’d had with any other friend, excluding Steve. ‘It’s all right,’ the boy said softly with a half-smile on his face. Even managing to make eye-contact, the blonde continued, ‘I lived there for eleven years. Yino is like home for me.’ It was true: Yino was like home for him. Just not the house he “lived” in. For the most part, he spent his childhood out in the streets- not because he had to, but out of choice. He knew the streets like the cracks in the ceiling of Toni’s apartment- which, just for the record, he’d spent a lot of time staring at. He wondered if the same people still ran the shops there- he really missed Uncle Ricky, believe it or not. Uncle Ricky was of no relation to him- he was just one of the cooks at Lorenzo’s who would feed him and take him home to play with his children on occasion. The Italian man had provided him glimpses into a family atmosphere, and for that he was grateful.

Danny hoped desperately for one such feeling of family when he got to his house- a hope that he knew would most likely never be fulfilled. In the end, he just smiled again. 'What kind of business were you thinking of starting?' Unconciously, he tilted his head at a slight angle.
