Epic Failure
This was something I had to do for AP English, grade 11, just recently. I really love how it turned out! Below is the prompt, then the actual story proceeding. Feedback would be wonderful, since I believe we need to make a final copy of it later. Oh, and ignore the spacing. =( I can't get it to format right on here.

The Prompt: To write an imitation-style piece based on the Scarlet Letter, when Hester is standing on the scaffold, looking back at her life. Six images had to be included, each relating to the progression of the crime. The audience should be able to guess the crime at the end of the piece, without it being stated.

A Distant Reflection
A lone, precious doll hangs limply in the clutches of a fragile hand, one not much larger than its own. The simplistic toy composed of little more than cheap rubber and synthetic blond hair draws forth an expression from the child that transcends words. Like a fool oblivious to the world that awaits her, she grins madly at those surrounding. Yet, in mere moments, the scene is washing away to something else, something far beyond the innocence of early childhood. Shards of transparent glass and opaque porcelain stake their claim about a checkerboard floor. Though no blood stains the scene, the evidence is enough for any simpleton to comprehend, let alone a child now far beyond her years in mentality. Off to the side, acting as an observer to the chaos, she lurks. Eventually, they’ll look for her, attempt to find her. Until then, she remains nestled between the multicolored kitchen table and a dark, wooden door. What seems like a lifetime later, the shell of a young, cowering child has been discarded. In its place, a self-conscious dancer arises, a pink dance bag in tow. Soft, pink ballet shoes protrude from their carrier, right alongside sturdier pairs of tap and jazz shoes. With a false smile almost always about her face, the girl offers the image of the standard dancer. Transparent tights consume her legs, only while a black leotard clings greedily to her still developing form. Yet, still years later, once time has managed to chip away at the already fraying edges of her sanity, the same bag can be found pushed into the depths of a rarely made bed. Dust drowns the fabric without a second thought, the bag no more than a souvenir. In its place, paperbacks and hardbacks are scattered about a cluttered computer desk. Though the titles vary, the words ‘crime’, ‘murder’, and ‘forensics’ appear to dominate. A fascination with crime lingers where a love for dance once stood, festering quietly beneath the girl’s very fingertips in the form of written words. A more tangible fascination floods the scene once further, ever elusive time has come to pass. In flesh and blood, her love stands before her very eyes. Brown curls of an angel rest upon his scalp, only while ever moving, chocolate eyes taunt her mind. Like a giant, he stands a good foot above her, almost like a beanstalk from a fairytale she’s long forgotten. His arms have enclosed her, though it is she that has created the lack of distance between them. For once, she is at peace, or so her tranquil airs dare to suggest. Then, in a flash of time, it’s gone. A vixen materializes near the couple only months later, only once the girl is out of reach. Clothed in a stunning designer leotard, with equally expensive ballet shoes, she is what the girl could, and would, never be. Brunette locks form a perfect bun about her head, only while amber lipstick masks her lips. A glint in her eyes is all the girl needs to see to know the truth. The vixen, the seductress, is after her love, her one and only.
