The figure was hunched over slightly on the road bench, something small flipping over in its long fingers, unwrapping and wrapping a string around the circle, weaving out of the already made loops and other intricate designs on the small dream catcher. The hooded figure paused in its activity and looked up as someone walked by in the early morning. The figure held up the catcher and gazed through the empty hole in the center at the person and on its own accord the single string completely rearranged itself around the circle of wood. The figure clicked their tongue at the new design, slipping the cord around its hooded head, sliding the catcher beneath the folds of the trench coat, it stood.

The figure was tall, far beyond six feet tall, and dawned all in black. The combat boots, long baggy pants and a clasped trench coat, although the morning wasn't especially cold, just a bit windy. Just as the figure stood, a particularly hungry gust of wind threw back the hood, releasing a long wave of dark hair, falling far down the figure's back. A sigh escaped the mouth of the seemingly tall and stick-like girl, although she didn't like her hair down, she did not fix her hood back to her head. Running her long fingers down her hair she took off down the road from the doomed person behind her, already hearing the squealing tires of the drunk driver. Nadia shrugged. It was fate. No need to feel sad or weird about it. A grin rose on her lips at the sound of breaking glass. She didn't turn her back because she didn't want to see Death claim the unsuspecting person or the stupid driver. She just kept walking, ducking into a semi-crowded restaurant for a drink.

Nadia slid up into one of the bar stools at the front, grabbing one of the menus and flipping through it looking at the greasy pictures of food. Nothing looked very appetizing, so she decided to entertain herself by taking hold of the dream catcher hidden in her jacket and she gazing at the other patrons, glancing at them through the hole in the dream catcher, she watched as it rearranged its self. Some of them were pretty impressive, the old man in the corner only had three days left though. But it would be in his sleep. Nadia glanced down at the dream catcher, wishing she it would work on herself so she would know the day, but it didn't work like that so it would remain a mystery to her until it actually happened. She went back to gazing through her dream catcher at the other patrons, giggling sometimes at what the story told her.

At one table there were two boys who looked like they hadn't seen sleep in forty days and forty nights. One was barely more than a vaguely animated pile of laundry, with a big, flat, runny nose poking out of the shirt collar. It wasn't even clean laundry. Reaching across the table to shake him, with a look of genuine concern, was the other, who shivered constantly and sometimes jumped involuntarily. This one looked like a shaved poodle with bulging, cute eyes. Together as a piece, both boys were ragged and abused-looking. Not safe and unsuspicious at all. They probably left the house every day to get away from the beatings.

The delicate vibrating one pried the lump's chin off of the table and tried to force a cup of coffee down its throat. The lump defended by sliding, exhaustedly, under the table. The coffee slipped and spilled all over the table and bench, and the chihuahua freaked. It grabbed the whole quiver of napkins sitting quietly beneath the window and threw them at the stain, scolding the softly snoring shambles whose cheek had landed in a syrup stain.

"Come on, it's such a beautiful day, and you're sleeping through it! We were going to go to the park and feed the birds and play hopscotch and- and- do things friends do! And then we would- oh, fiddlesticks, out of napkins!" In response to this came a tiny snort from below. The squirrel hopped from the table to get someone else's napkins to waste. It was headed towards a seat at the bar.

(ooc: I'm sorry... That was mean of me to make you wait like that. I'll try to do better in the future, I promise!)

She saw two young boys in one of the corners, looking ruffled and scared. She cocked an eyebrow at what the catcher told her. If she didn't know death so well she would think the one that slid under the table was about to die on the spot. She raised an eyebrow at the other that ran over to grab the napkins from the dispenser next to her. She slid it slightly away from her.

"Maybe you should have spilled it on him. That might have woken him up." She said with a giggle, helping him pull the napkins out because he was shaking so bad. She followed him back to the table and helped him mop up the mess, grinning slightly at the fact she practically towered over the young boy.

"Don't people your age have, like, parents?" She asked raising her eyebrow.

“Oh! Ma’am! A-course we do! Just outta town! What’re ya so worried a-bout?” the chipmunk shouted, nodding and smiling. “Ahahaheh.” Unconsciously kicking the blob under the table, preventing sleep even yet.

With no spill to clean, the big eyes focused, mesmerized, on this woman’s authoritative face. He sucked on a half-full frozen espresso chai, obviously bought from another spot. He was suddenly acting all bashful around an adult- a-whell, someone with the definite air of an adult, couldn’t be too sure though, sure was nice to help though, nice stranger- who had been so nice.

She winced at his loud chatter and tried to keep the glare from her face. "Just wondering." She said with a shrug. "People usually go to places like this with parents...or has that changed?" She asked curiously as she kept glancing down at the boy on the floor.

"Is he drugged or something?" She asked balling up the coffee sodden napkins and threw them into the trash and then turned back to see the bubbly one looking at her with a half open mouth. She watched him for a moment and then waved her hand in the space between them. "Are you drugged too?" She asked curiously, thinking there was something completely not normal about these two...then again she wasn't exactly the definition of 'normal.'

The redhead wheezed when a kick caught him between the eyes. He leapt, and knocked his head on the table. “Ah SUgar!” he swore. His hand found an edge to grab.

“You’re familiar somehow- Nyah! Oh, yeah, really, a-course! Eheh. …Excuse me. Hna. Yep, family values these days- Hehheh. Families who don’t talk- well, it isn’t all bad. Just last weekMom’nme were goin’tothemuseum. It was fun. I just didn’tthinkMom’dwanttacomealonganddokidstuffallday wit’ Cody. ‘S all,” the pair of yellow eyes was saying to the dark stranger all the while she tossed out the napkins. “-Oh! Cody! I’m so sorry-” it jumped when Cody appeared, looking wide awake with a bleeding nose. A dust bunny clung to his ear. “Oh, well, have you met- I’m sorry, I didn’t even ask your name, Mrs.! You’re still a stranger!”

Cody stared, blank, at the lady. She gave him a feeling of unease. Chickadee nodded deferentially to her.

Nadia watched with a raised eyebrow as he kicked the other boy. She was pretty sure a kick to the head was sooo not a good idea because of the possibility of head trauma. She knew the boy wouldn't die from it, but didn't humans not like pain.... Then again these two didn't seem human.

She didn't voice this though, because the one that was still conscious had lapsed into a story that made her smirk rise across her teeth, revealing her pearly whites. Her eyebrow raised higher as the other one crawled out with a bloody nose. Ow. Or at least it looked like it hurt. Nadia rubbed the side of her nose self consciously.

"Not Mrs.. Just Nadia. I'm only eighteen." Just saying it out loud made her giggle a little. Eighteen?! Try eight hundred! But, she wasn't actually supposed to tell anybody that. She looked back down at the boys, reached out and plucked the dust bunny from his ear and watched it drift from her fingers. "Nice to meet you two." She said flashing another smile.

The corner of Cody’s mouth tried to smile when Nadia’s (How high could an eyebrow be raised? He suddenly wondered.) fingers brushed his cheek. He found himself, inevitably, flushing apple red.

The chipmunk was talking again. “Nehe, Nadia, huh? Nice name! You’re still old enough to be Cody’s big sister! -This is Cody, nicetameetcha- Cody, what’s wrong?- And I’m Ivan Metzinger, ‘n proud of it. There, we’re all introduced. Anyonelse? Khkhehe! Alright then! Nice to meet you too!” Still with that big friendly smile, and reaching to pat the specter on the back. Cody was actually glad for the constant wibble, for once, to divert this strange city lady’s attention away from him. He rubbed the blood off of his nose, the pain already gone; and his eyes drifted surreptitiously to the door.

The red that suddenly exploded in his cheeks looked delicious, and oddly enough the other boys chatter distracted her from that scrumptious color. She titled her head to the side looking at her and boy as he continued to talk faster and faster. She wondered if there was ever a time when he couldn't think of anything to say. "Do you mind if I join you? I lost my job and have nothing to do with my day." She said with what she thought was a sad expression, but she couldn't stop the giggle that escaped as an ambulance flew by outside with its siren blaring.

She then slid into the booth the boys were sitting in and waving at the waitress that had failed to come to her when she was at the counter. Poor service. Nadia would have to check her death date and see if she could change her date. Nadia slid her hand in the fold of the top of her coat and pulled out the black dream catcher and was about to raise it to her eye when she realized the boys would probably notice what she was doing and ask about it. So she lowered it down a bit and looked at it like it was just a trinket, running one of her fingers across the strings looking at the design of the last person she looked at.

“Do I mind?!” Ivan jumped out of his seat and tried to kiss her. “Oh, you’re the nicest stranger ever!!” He pulled his head away too late to save Nadia’s ears from the squeal of delight. Cody squeezed sheepishly under the pressure of proximity to a scary woman’s body.

The Cody was naturally eyeing her very carefully. He thought he noticed her trying to hide the purposeful way she reached under her shirt- by grabbing instead that ethnic-looking curio? What was under there (Cody often wondered this about girls, but usually for different reasons.)? His heart jumped- she was hiding something. Was she up to something- befriending them for a hidden reason? Gasp- She could be a plainclothes cop! That would be great! The ride was over for his psychotic buddy here and Cody could go home in the comfort of- No, wait- With his luck, this shady ‘Nadia’ lady was just some vicious freelance child molester. He was gonna get molested. He had to get out of here.

As he thought all this, the spotty boy looked from the catcher to Nadia’s face in his subdued nervous way. And of course, from the other side of the table, Ivan hadn’t shut up for a moment about all the things he had been planning to force Cody to do, and which this frightening mystery woman was now letting herself in for.

Nadia jumped in surprised at the warmth that shot through her cheek. What in the hell was that?! She turned her head with a frown on her face and in her eyes when his voice exploded into his high pitched banter. She winced away from it and was met with the wall against her shoulder. Ow. Stupid human body. She rubbed her shoulder as she watched the boy in amazement just keep chattering and chattering. Some of it got so fast she thought he was just saying 'blllllahllfllelllfhhhhesddd", or something like that. She pointed a finger at him, her other hand put the catcher back into her coat, hiding the wonderful thing from view. "Do you...ever...stop talking?" She asked, having to raise her voice to get over his high pitched chatter.

When he didn't seem to hear her, she turned her attention to the other boy. "Does he always do that?" She asked, seeing his deep thought look on his face she lowered her hand and raised her eyebrow. He seemed to be staring at her? Maybe she was being paranoid, he was a little kid after all. Or was he? Nadia wasn't sure, he seemed to act old, but the look in his eyes seemed.....paranoid...perhaps.

Cody gulped. He was being asked to say something. “Uhn… He, uh…” Gosh, what to say about it? “I think it’s just the caffeine. I always thought he was more the… shy type.”

He didn’t like the look of suspicion… and… possibly… molestation… that this Nadia mirrored in her own eyes… but he told himself he was just being hideously paranoid. It was this stress and lack of sleep getting to him. She was probably a very nice woman, like most every woman was.

“Ah, what’re we waitin’ for?” The hypercaffeinated one suddenly slammed the table with a fist; in a way, a response to Nadia’s plaint. “Let’s jus’ get outta here! There’s so much to DAY!” He hopped on top of the table, spilling his own drink; and the next moment the door was slamming, to the alarm of most people in the restaurant.

And then it opened again, and Ivan leaned back over the threshold. “Oh yeah, two hot chocolates to go kthanx! ‘Cmon Cody! Naddi!” And then he was gone.

Nadia's eyebrow sloped upwards again as he stammered. She relaxed back into the booth and glanced at the boy who still seemed to be chattering. She ran her finger across her lip as the other demanded they leave that instant. Nadia wasn't sure she agreed there was so much to do. Her life had been pretty boring thus far, though she had to admit these two boys seemed to put her in a slightly better mood.

Nadia scooted half way out of the booth and then glanced at Cody, "I am quite amazed you're friends with him." She told the boy then stood, smoothing out her coat around her she put her hands in her pockets and left after him.

Cody had been about to seize the opportunity and say- “I’m not friends with him. I’m prisoners!”- but, to the sinking of his heart, she had apparently meant her snipe of amazement rhetorically. She had gotten up and left before he opened his mouth.

Once outside for a few seconds, it occurred to Ivan that he had been rather rude to that nice Mrs.-no, Miss- Nadia. He began to feel a little bit uncomfortable, noticing only now the irritated look she had built up progressively. Oh, that had been no way to treat someone so nice- and trying to put a brave face on her unemployment, too! He should ch… no, he should give her some space. Some shy types didn’t like being talked at or offered favors. If only he’d seen it sooner! So nice! Shouldn’t have offended her! And the nice waitress too…

Ivan chewed on his finger, feeling the nail crunch and sucking at the sting-y pulp underneath, in a small effort to make himself feel better. He’d still have to do something really nice to make up for this… The yellow eyes fell on the bruised and slightly bloody headlight of the truck, stopped where it had hit some lucky guy.

Nadia felt herself scowling slightly as he moved on ahead of them. Hadn't he realized how far ahead he was, or how much the other boy, Cody, didn't seem to want to follow him. She let out a sigh, but then he stopped walking and she stopped her progression to. Now standing next to him she saw a frown work on his eyes and she resisted the urge to smooth out his forehead and eyebrows.

"What troubles you little ball of energy?" She asked him, seeing him look over at the wreck. She tried to stop a giggle. "Don't worry about them." She told him. "Everyone dies. And when someones time is up, then it is up." She said with a carefree smile. "Things like that." She said nodding over to the crash, "Things like that happen all the time. Death is a pretty precise work of art, where no one person can understand how it works. But Death is also painless. No matter what anyone says."
