10:30 A.M., less than one day into the game... A rundown of each player I've interacted with, in order of first contact. Won't rule anyone in or out as an ally quite yet -- but I'm on the lookout for warning signs, or, conversely, hints of who I might be able to work with: Ozzy -- six replies, all short and to the point. I feel he's keeping his cards close to his chest, for now. Which is understandable. Diane -- She started off friendly and social, but still reserved at first. I'm getting definite Curt/Emily/Jessica vibes from her. I'm trying to reciprocate. She's here to PLAY. I've been attempting to return the feelers I can sense she's putting out toward me, so hopefully we can keep the dialogue going. Brooke -- I think she's also a returning veteran, albeit perhaps one who is trying to act like a first-time player to throw people off? I felt her holding back at first, out of caution. But now I sense she is opening up a little bit with our Real-Life (i.e. the TV Franchise "fanboying"/"fangirling") Survivor Talk. Nick -- nine replies back and forth within the same night. He's a vet, for sure. He's told me how he thinks everything that everyone does is a game move, which is definitely an observation made by someone with experienced game. He's avoiding the flashiness and aiming for a subversive, no-frills, cutthroat game. I'm going to have to keep an eye on him. He's feeling me out, I can tell. But if he's as in-it-to-win-it as I suspect he is, is there a way I can endear myself to him to at least stay on his good side up through midgame? Leann -- she seems to be trying to deflect her hesitance with humor...but underneath, I can tell she's ready to play. Joel -- another nice-but-hesitant person. I can tell he's got game that he's ready to unleash at any moment. This is a relationship that is worth cultivating. Tony -- Some pop culture chat up front, and a little bit of paranoia on his part. But that's understandable. He's paying attention to the active users roster of who is logged online in real-time, and he seems slightly worried about scheming and plotting already. I feel my best bet with him is to find a way to make him comfortable with me, regardless of whether we're on separate or the same tribes in the beginning. Zeke -- very cerebral and gregarious. Zeke, whoever you are, if you're reading this after the game has fully concluded -- I *really* want to play with you, and I hope we can make something great happen together! He's absolutely into the franchise, and probably even a RPG veteran. Mark him down as a potential alliancemate. Todd -- similar to Zeke, he's reaching out to me in his replies right from the get-go. Todd is here to play. He's personable but clearly has a lot of background on Survivor, and is knowledgeable about the franchise. He *claims* he isn't familiar with the SurvivorSucks messageboards, but I don't know if I believe him. But aversion is plentiful amongst these contestants...I would love to play with him and see how far we can get, together. Dave -- I'm torn between whether his fish/fishing metaphors are figurative and just for fun...or are they metaphorical, the way I was initially intending for mine to be? In other words: is Dave using the "fish talk" to feel me out and communicate with me in terms of whether I'd be someone whom he could strategize with, at least for the first half of the game? His references to "What they can eat" and "BREAKFAST!" seem to suggest he's sizing up potential targets and allies already...and does he want to see if I'm on-board with it? On the other hand, I can't shake the feeling that he *might* be Cameron from Return to Amazon, who bamboozled me (although lovably and endearingly so) during my first time around; he was "Dave" during that season, too. Brobst wouldn't assign "Dave" to the same person, two seasons apart, as a way of throwing us returnees off...or WOULD he??? Rudy -- I can't tell if he's being metaphorical or just getting into the role-playing gimmick of channeling Rudy Boesch. Need more info on him... Amanda -- a bit reserved, but is probably a veteran. Picked my brain about possible tribe divisions coming down the pipe. Cirie -- friendly, but didn't offer much info yet. Descriptive, possibly a returnee. Denise -- getting "newbie" vibes from her. I don't want to categorically discount all potential first-timers, though. Sierra -- also giving off novice vibes, although I also feel she might be projecting that vibe on purpose. Julie -- Not picking up on much from her one way or the other, aside from a bit of fan "shop talk"...which doesn't necessarily mean she's new or experienced. Michelle and Misty are MIA. Could either of them end up becoming the "Jeanne" from my first season...someone who simply is never around, so their heads are first on the chopping block? I really want to see what I can make happen with Diane, Zeke, Todd, and Dave. My second "tier" is Brooke, Julie, Tony, Joel, Nick, and Leann. I need to find a way to gather more info on each of them, but there might be some real possibilities there, too. Then there's everyone else -- Ozzy, Rudy, Amanda, Cirie, Denise, Sierra, Michelle, and Misty. Some contestants might think it's not worth pursuing someone who has been minimally responsive. I disagree. You never know when you're going to need someone as an ally during the game. In that spirit, I would like to keep pursuing them as possible allies; the trick, however, is how to do so in a way that doesn't make me come off too strong and overbearing to any of them. I have to be a little more cautious with these people -- both because I don't know what their intentions are yet...have they been cultivating big alliances, and I'm just not a part of it...are any of them newcomers who haven't caught onto the nuances and mechanisms of a game like this...or are they here more for the experience and aren't gaming yet in their heads in a big way? What I want to do during the next six hours is hang back, try to get a better lay of the land, and see who comes to me. If I don't feel I have more info by 4pm or 5pm, I need to find an effective way to dig deeper. By the end of Friday night, I'm hoping I'll have placed myself on several players' alliance-lists (at least the initial versions of them) |

The trick is to crack the veneer of the seemingly "shy folks" while not coming off as *too* annoying to them in the process. Can I do it?
