So it's five tribes of four members each. One of several possible scenarios that me and several other people seemed to be running in our heads. I'm teamed with Joel, Rudy, and Dave. So first, the obvious downside: I'm separated from Zeke, Todd, Diane, and a few of the other people who I felt I'd made optimistic connections with. We were all prepared for that possibility, and I'm glad a brought it up in detail to them before the tribal-divisions went down. Also, there's the even more obvious reality that it's more difficult to "lay low" on a tribe of only four people. There are a couple of upsides, potentially. First, with five tribes of four, I feel it will only be a matter of time before we get reshuffled into two or three larger tribes. That could give me the potential to build better relationships with some of those people who I made exploratory connections with (Brooke, Nick, Sierra, Amanda, Denise)...as well as possibly getting to reunite with people such as Zeke, Todd, and Diane who I really want to share notes with. Or meet entirely new people who I haven't really connected with, previously. But more immediately: on this Cork tribe of four, Joel seems to share my appreciation for the game and my desire to want to play. He also seems similarly exasperated with Rudy's and Dave's cryptic styles of game play. More about that, in a moment... If Joel and I can survive together until the next swap (assuming there is one), that only expands my social network for future rounds. Joel has been very open and candid with me, and I have no reason to believe he isn't genuine. Actually, he's pretty much my only option, since he's the only one out of those three who seems to share my desire to talk a lot. Nonetheless, I do believe that -- like Todd, Diane, and Zeke -- he's a gamer who wants to play, and who wants to see creative and competitive people slug it out in the second half of the game. So I view it as Joel and me trying to figure out how to navigate these earliest rounds -- either with or without Rudy and/or Dave. I say this because, for all we know, Cork could win until the next swap...or, at least, do well enough to avoid tribal council. On the flip side, we could end up attending every tribal council...at which point, it would be a matter of myself and Joel figuring out how to make sure the two of us are the ones who stay alive. And add to that the possibility that there may be some sort of wacky Irish-themed twist where one of the four of us gets isolated from the others -- or is granted temporary immunity -- if Cork loses tonight. I actually wouldn't be surprised if TWO tribes (the fourth-placers and the fifth-placers) have to go to tribal council tonight. That brings me to Rudy and Dave. Rudy is out in all of his fullest grumpy glory. That's fine for the public boards, but I need more from him when we have possible eliminations coming up. He has expressed the adamant desire to win and avoid tribal council altogether. I agree, of course; we all do. But what if we don't win, Rudy? What then? I don't know where his head is at, and it makes me wonder if he's literally a first-time player...or maybe a returnee who is having just a little too much fun "getting into character?" Which was the flaw that doomed me, last time around. Dave is someone who likewise frustrates me. Every message he exchanges with me is about fishing. Every. Damn. Message. What he caught...what he's hoping to catch...how glad he is to be feeding the tribe. And then, when I ask him if his references are literal or metaphorical, he tells me they're literal. He loves to fish. Gee, Dave, thanks...but this isn't a dating site. I need more from you than that. You know what I really hope will happen? I hope Amanda and Sierra decide to throw the challenge, just so they can vote out either Misty or Michelle. Because every indication seems to be that Misty/Michelle are either totally MIA or very minimally involved with the game right now. And if Amanda/Sierra are savvy players, they'd realize that these five-tribes-of-four should only be temporary, and that it's best for everyone (including Brobst!) to throw the dead weight overboard. But the reality is that, for now, I'm only allowed to strategize with Joel, Rudy, and Dave. So I feel that Joel and I pretty much know where the other stands, and we both want to play. So, in the event we all have to go to tribal council -- who would be less useful to my game, going forward? Rudy or Dave? It's pretty much a coin-flip, right now. For all I know, Rudy and Dave could be conspiring against me and Joel, and just playing dumb to try to throw us off or confuse us...well, if they are, then it's working! And none of us wants to revert to the scenario of only two people having to draw rocks. Then again, maybe Joel/Rudy/Dave are all just playing *me*? Sending Joel to be the "good cop" around me, while Rudy and Dave put on a cryptic/mysterious act. Although that's certainly possible, I don't want to get *too* bogged down in paranoia. Paranoid players don't usually go very far...unless they have a strong social group of allies, like Chase did in Survivor: Nicaragua. And that dolt almost won the whole damn game! (losing to Fabio by only one measly vote) But that was different -- La Flor and Espada didn't start off with five tiny little tribes of four. |

How surprised are you that Dave can't seem to get past this "fishing" talk? I mean, it's now Day 4. Do you think he's just struggling with other subjects to talk about? Or is he missing your social cues when you straight up asked him if he's being literal or metaphorical? |

I've run the likeliest scenarios when thinking about him, and it's really hard to say. On the one hand, Dave could indeed just be totally clueless in terms of understanding my subtext. The subtext of my question being -- "Dude, when you are talking about fishing, are you using 'catching fish' as a metaphor for the other players whom you've encountered?" That's why I tried to be a little more direct when following up with our fun-loving exchanges...but when he answered "literal," I'm not sure he understood what I was getting at when I'd referred to the possibility of whether we'd both been speaking in metaphors (i.e. "coded" talk). On the other hand, it's possible I revealed too much to Dave -- that he's actually much cagier than he's letting on, so he's "playing dumb" when I asked him about metaphors...that he now views me as an early threat, and he's going to try to make something happen with Rudy and/or Joel if we all go to tribal council. That's why I'm trying not to come off as *too* intimidating or headstrong with him...as badly and intensely as I want to communicate more openly with him. At this point, I've got to find a way to keep from driving myself crazy over this...since my desire to play on a much bigger tribe with a lot more people is fueling me. And possibly stoking my paranoia. Last I talked with Joel, he'd expressed that his gut told him that -- between Rudy and Dave -- he felt Rudy would be the better first target at a tribal council. So, hopefully, Joel and I can talk some more before the challenge tonight. Between the three of them, I feel that if there's the ability for me to actually work with any of them, Joel would be the one. And I want him to feel/realize that he and I can be equal partners, at this phase. That's why I'm trying to consider what unexpected twist, post-challenge, might hypothetically affect a losing tribe(s). Which means if my (positive) gut instinct is correct about Joel, it really comes down to who our target should be: Rudy or Dave? I don't want us to make the decision too frivolously, if only because I'm constantly running all permutations of what might happen (twists, eliminations, etc.) in these earliest rounds of game play. So while Sandra Diaz-Twine might advise me: "As long as it ain't you, Bubba..." -- the first member of our tribe ejected could lead to greater ramifications down the road in unexpected ways. |

I hope so, Brobst. I hope so. If it benefits me, I'll take whatever outcome I can get. I keep reminding myself not to overplay...not too hard, this early. I may be dead-wrong about what I have with Joel...but I don't see any other rational option, at this point. I'm practically duct-taping my arms to a recliner, trying to keep myself from turning into Vanessa Rousso from BB17.

Bubba, I get it now! It all makes sense! I honestly wasn't playing dumb...I seriously was fishing! I was on my summer break before being back at work. I never caught the cue...but you are correct. Definitely cagier then realized. I got too big for my britches and paid for it. I genuinely do appreciate yoy and your game play. I was literally screaming through the screen after my blindside for Diane to join you, Joel, and Rudy. The four of you would have made a formidable foursome. Loved talking to you. Now, let's talk about some real life topics, and not B.S. Miguel |

That's hilarious to hear that you were ACTUALLY fishing while on vacation. I honestly couldn't tell if you were having fun role-playing, or trying to suss me out by speaking in code. I guess it was neither of those scenarios. Me/Rudy/Joel/Diane would've made a great team, for awhile, anyway. But Ozzy and Brooke weren't having any of it. As far as real-life topics...I can always point you toward my online editorial/op-ed column, if you're interested.

Yes you guys would have. Here is why... Any of you would have told me to my face the truth. In my thread, you will see I cheer on Diane and Rudy for a lot of the game. I bonded with both of them, Diane because of her honesty, and Rudy because of the Navy connection (see my response about me sighing in relief I wasn't Rudy). I would love to get to know you, as well as you get to know the real me. Show me the way. Miguel (Dave) |

You asked for it... https://www.thisismorpheus.com/author/anthonye/ And no, I have no intention of ever running for political office, myself (people ask me that all of the time)... |

Ha! I love it. I can see I've got some reading to do now Anthony. I'm looking forward to a long and fruitful real life friendship, and I definitely hope we cross paths again in another Brobst game.
