Knaresborough parking permits

Notices have gone up around town in the public car parks notifying us of an increase in the charges for residents parking permits from £16 a year to £180. This is over 1000% increase in one go.
Legally the charges for residents parking are to cover the administration. We need to ask why the administration has gone up over 1000% in a single year at a time of austerity when the council is supposed to be reigning in it's costs.
It's also pertinant to point out that between the hours of 6 in the evening and 8 in the morning when most residents park up, all our car parking in town is free anyway, so residents are going to be charged exhorbitantly for something that is in the main free to everyone else.
Residents of Barnet have just fought a similar case in the high court and won. The Barnet council were found to be acting illegally in imposing a smaller increase than in Knaresborough.

There are other parking issues coming up in Knaresborough too. There is a proposal to do away with the on street parking on our High Street to ease the traffic congestion during the day and enable an on street bus stop to be placed. As it's not the parking but the congestion around the lights at either end of the High Street and the ridiculous number of busses during the day that are causing the congestion we would be losing a valuable resource for no gain.

The council also want to move our coach drop off point and re mark the Fisher Street car park to include another 20 or so spaces.

For all the above reasons it would be an idea to ask Knaresborough Town Council to organise a public meeting so we can voice our concerns and objections to these proposals before it is too late. It would be good to get local councilors to intervene with Harrogate Borough Council on our behalf in these issues.

With this in mind we would ask concerned residents to email clerk@knaresboroughtowncouncil.gov.uk
And request a public meeting.

Here is an article about the Barnet court case website link
