An Unfortunate Event of Unexpected Bioterrorism; Tag: Glaive

Full Circle was going to Ponyville's town well, looking for some water for his soup. They'd cut him off at The Sigil for the day, after he took a bit over 1,200 gallons of water for an ice sculpture. He was a bit upset at them, but it seemed fair all the same. 1,200 gallons was quite a bit of water to take in one day, but he wasn't about to let his family down.

As he approached the well, he saw his best friend, Shining Glaive, standing near it as well. He waved a hoof at the pegasus.

"Good day, Glaive!"

Glaive looked up from his work and waved back to his friend. Glaive and Jade were having dinner together, later in the day, and his wife and sent him here to get water for their stew. He pulled up the bucket, water spilling over the side, and dumped most of it into his own tank.

"Hey, Circle. Here."

He passed Circle a cup full of water with a smile.

"A drink to our health, eh? Cheers!"

He lifted his own cup and took a deep drink.

Circle took the cup happily. Today was going to be a good day. He could just...feel it.

"Quite. Cheers!"

He drank from the water. Something about it tasted a bit off today, but it wasn't a bad taste. It was sweeter than normal. That was odd to say the least. Had some prankster been adding large amounts of sugar to the supply?

As his mind wandered away, he felt something changing within him. It wasn't painful, so it was unlikely that he'd just been poisoned. All the same, he felt something missing. Something...important. Circle checked his basic physiology, but nothing seemed to have changed. He looked towards his friend.

"Hey Glaive, did that water taste...off, to you?"

"...A little, yeah."

Circle's voice sounded weird. In fact, his own voice sounded weird as well. How strange. Perhaps there was something in the water? Whatever it was, it didn't seem to be affecting only his voice, because his entire body...tingled. In a very strange way. He looked at the bucket of water, and his reflection looked back at him. And yet, it wasn't his reflection at all...

"...What."

Circle trotted over towards the water, not having looked away from his cup yet. Perhaps Glaive had found what was wrong with their well? The unicorn looked in, and saw two unfamiliar-looking ponies looking back at them.

"Glaive, why are there mares drowning in the..."

His mind finally caught up with the situation. They'd been subject to biological terrorism of the worst sort. By the looks of things, they'd been turned into mares.

"Wait. No. That's us."

The unicorn had never had any interests in body modification spells that changed gender, so this was a new experience for him. Luckily, with everypony looking like a mare, he wouldn't be so ridiculed anymore.

"Well, look on the bright side, Glaive. At least we're not dead."

"I...I guess that's true."

Glaive sat down heavily. He...or rather, she...felt a little dizzy, and considering her suddenly unfamiliar body, that's not exactly surprising.

"Th-that's...easy for you to say! You don't even look any different!"

It felt like a dagger had pierced though Circle's heart. She sat down heavily as well, rather upset at the comment, which wasn't like her at all. Tears started to form in the unicorn's eyes.

"T-that's not true. I u-used to look l-like a stallion. W-why would you e-even say that?"

She was on the verge of a breakdown from one comment. Clearly something had gone terribly wrong with her mind when the transformation happened.

"Don't start crying now! I...I...I'm sorry..."

Glaive dropped her cup and wrapped her forelegs around Circle's body. She gently ran her hooves down the other mare's body, making soothing noises.

"I shouldn't have said that...I'm so sorry..."

"T-that's alright, Glaive. I-I'm used t-to ponies making fun of the w-way I look..."

While that was true, her feelings still felt like they'd been shattered by some sort of magical hammer. Was this what being a mare was like? She made a mental note to ask Wild later, preparing herself for the inevitable slap that would likely follow. The unicorn's mind was still reeling though, and if she was going to have a breakdown, she'd prefer that it didn't happen in Town Square.

"C-can we go somewhere else for now?"

"Uh...r-right...uh...let's get to..."

Not home. Home would be a bad place to get to at the time. Glaive didn't really want to explain her current state. Jade might understand (in fact, she might not even mind), but Whisper...well, that would just be far to awkward to explain.

"...Wait, Sphere and Moon are having a playdate with Whisper right now...uh...let's go to Book Store. Q-quickly, before anypony sees me!"

"Y-yes, sees you."

What was that supposed to mean? Was there really so little different with Circle that they wouldn't notice? That was a soul-crushing revelation. Still, with Glaive by her side, it wouldn't be that bad.

"Come on. Follow me."

The unicorn started trotting towards his home, hoping that the pegasus would follow.

"Ah, I hate to push, but...c-could we get there a bit...faster?"

Glaive nervously looked around. There weren't many ponies out and about, and most of them seemed pretty preoccupied with something or other, and...oh. Oh, no.

"Uh, Circle...look. That's...Bon Bon over there...and she...well, is a he."

Circle looked, and sure enough, Bon Bon was looking a great deal more stallionish than usual. It seemed as though Glaive and him...herself, rather, weren't the only ones that had had their genders changed. Maybe there was some kind of playful magical spirit playing a trick on the town. Or maybe...maybe this was an act of bioterrorism! She'd only changed when they drank from the town's water supply. He'd have to think about that later. For now, they had to retreat to Book Store.

They arrived at his front door a few minutes later, and Circle quickly unlocked the door and ushered Glaive inside, closing the door behind them. Book Store seemed rather quiet at the moment, so Wild and the foals were either sleeping, or out elsewhere.

"So...what do we do now? What if this doesn't just wear off naturally?"

Glaive paced around the foyer, thinking hard. She stopped and thumped her hoof against her forehead a few times. Whatever caused this must have been in the water...and it had tasted strange...she knew that flavour and, thinking back on it, that smell...she stopped and stomped a hoof down.

"Of course! That was poison joke! Aha, it must have gotten into the water supply somehow...I wonder why it's affecting everypony the same way, though...that's really odd..."

Poison joke. That water did taste just a bit like it. Something was...off, though. Her original thought of biological terrorism might not have been too far off. If it was poison joke though, it'd be simple enough to cure. Well, that was if they could find some zebra to help them out. Zebrican magic played a big part in curing poison joke, and even though Circle had been raised in Zebrica, his body still lacked a zebra's innate magicks.

"That seems like a fair enough estimate, Glaive. It's almost like somepony modified the poison joke to have a single effect on everything it came in contact with. I...I really don't want to head back out there until there's at least some talk of a cure."
