With Jade away, busy taking Whisperwind to an appointment with Colgate, Glaive was left watching over Shrubbery until it closed. It was a quiet day, and hardly anypony had come to the store. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing, of course. They weren't in any particular danger financially, and he needed to take care of some paperwork anyways. And so he sat at the counter of the shop, looking away from his work only when somepony entered the shop.

Wavelength entered the shop Shrubbery in Ponyville, looking for someone who he hadn't really spoken to in some time, "Hello," he said as he entered the door, dressed in full military attire including the various medals he had earned during his service, "Is this where I can find one Shadow Walker, also known as Shining Glaive to his friends and family?"
He looked around the shop until his eyes fell on the Pegasus sitting behind the counter, he looked a lot older than the last time he had seen him, but there was no mistaking that this was his old partner. "It's been too long."

Glaive's eyes immediately snapped up to the unicorn who entered his store, and he leaped to his hooves. Could it really be...? It was! His old partner, Wavelength, whom he once knew by the codename Steady Aim. He'd moved up in the world, it seemed, judging by the pips on his uniform designating him as a Major in the military.
"Wavelength! It's good to see you. My, it's been years, hasn't it? Ever since I retired...."

"Yes," Wavelength said as he looked around the store, "Its been a long time since I've seen either of you. I heard you have a foal now," he said as he turned towards Glaive again, "I'm a little hurt that I didn't get invited to the wedding, but I understand that you wanted to keep me out of it. I'd probably make the same decision if I was in your position."
He sighed and started wandering around the shop, it was a nice little set up they had here, "I'd hate to bring this up with you, but I've been having that I can only really talk to you about. Eclipse has been getting difficult for me to handle alone and there just hasn't been anyone who's been enough of a standout to recruit," he said as he found a chair and took a seat, "I'm getting older, my skills are still as sharp as ever, maybe even sharper, but its getting difficult to just keep up with the amount of work that's been coming out in the last few months from all around the world."
Wavelength looked up at his old friend, a look of concern on his face, "All of this is pointing to war, and I don't think I can handle the number of missions that would come during war time while also keeping up with my duties as a Major. I need two more members as quickly as possible, but I can't sacrifice quality. I need your help."

Glaive gazed at Wavelength impassively for a time, then shook his head sadly.
"I'm retired, Wave. You know that. Besides, during my time as senior agent, I only ever recruited one new member," He smirked and continued. "I mean, in retrospect it was the best decision I ever made, but the point still stands. Are there no acceptable potential recruits among the Guard, or the spies?"

"I know you're retired, but there's no one else to ask," Wavelength said with a sigh, "There's no one, the only person I can think of is Bladeborn, but I don't want to bring him into this he just doesn't deserve to have the burden placed on him. My spy network doesn't really have any fighters, let alone any killers, and the rest of the recruits are just not good enough to become members of Eclipse, I mean they're good, but not that good."
"I need to find a Pegasus like you, and an Earth pony like Jade, and there just aren't any out there," he said as he looked down to the floor, "I would never, ever ask you two to join again, but some clones would be so damn amazing," he said with a chuckle.

Glaive blanched and shook his head.
"No clones. I hate clones. Uh."
He kneaded a hoof against his head, thinking of what Wavelength might be able to do.
"You...haven't heard of anypony taking a stand for justice? Like what happened with Jade."

"Not yet, there just haven't been any vigilantes that I've heard of," Wavelength said as he shook his head, mad at himself already for what he was about to bring up, "But there have been some criminals, assassins and murderers, ponies who should be brought to justice."
"I don't want to believe it, but they might be my only hope."

Glaive shook his head vigourously.
"No. Such ponies simply cannot be trusted as members of Eclipse. They might turn on us, and certainly can't be trusted to be discrete. There's no need for any deaths beyond the target. ...Wait. There's this pony I met recently..."
Glaive told Wave about the strange, foreign pony he had met recently. Aevia. She seemed quite skilled with her battlestaff, and from what he saw, she was both trustworthy and moral. She might be the perfect candidate.

Wavelength listened intently as Glaive spoke of this new pony, this Aevia, "She sounds perfect, but I'd still like to see her before I make the call. I know your word is good, and I trust you more than a lot of ponies out there, but her skill is something I need to see with my own eyes. I'm sure you understand."
"But I think that's enough talk about these somewhat depressing matters," He said with a smile, "How has life been with Jade? I'm sure you two are much happier now that you've retired."

Glaive smiled widely and nodded.
"You have no idea, my friend. Life with her, and with Whisperwind -that's our daughter, by the way - has been nothing short of...well...marvelous. But that hardly seems like the right word. It's...hard to find the right words, really. I hope you get to know that feeling, some day."

"I'm happy for you, my friend," Wavelength said as his smile widened, "Sadly, I don't think I'll ever be able to enjoy the same life as you even after I retire from Eclipse, assuming I even live to see my own retirement. Even once I break my ties as a government sanctioned assassin, I'll still be tied to the military and my life will most likely be in danger. I don't think I would want to marry and have a kid if I there was a chance I could die and leave them alone."

Glaive nodded in agreement.
"I can understand that. I...I still do dangerous things, I admit. But I have no other skills. Fighting is really all I know..."
She shook his head sadly.
"I'm sorry I didn't invite you to the wedding, but...you had no reason to be there. Not from the eyes of any pony who didn't know of Eclipse. And...we tried to leave that life behind."

"I understand why you wouldn't want me there," Wavelength said with a nod, "I probably wouldn't have shown up even if you did invite me. I was part of your old life, hell I am still part of your old life, and I probably will be until I grow too old to be of any use, or I die in some diamond dog's tunnels."
Wavelength stood and walked around the store again, trying to take in as much of the life that Glaive had the ability to live while he could. He would never own a plant shop with the mare he loved, raising a child together and growing old peacefully.
"Its funny," Wave said as he picked up a potted plant that looked like a young cactus, "As much as I envy your new life, I could never see myself living it. I've always enjoyed being a member of Eclipse, every kill brings a sense of sick satisfaction with it. Now, please don't take that the wrong way. Its not the blood or the screams of pain that make me feel that way, quite the opposite, in fact, those images still disturb me even after experiencing them a hundred times."
He turned back to Glaive as he placed the plant back down, "Its the sense of fulfilling your duty to your country. Its the same feeling I get when I lead my troops to victory, just a lot more personal."

Glaive nodded slowly. He knew that feeling as well. Knowing that you had put down a dangerous enemy of peace and justice, and in doing so, served the land that had shaped and protected you, and all your ancestors, stretching into the mists of the ancient past. But though Glaive had held that feeling, it was always fleeting, slipping away in the grim certainty that what he did was still undeniably wrong.
"I wish you the best, Wavelength, and I think that you are right. For you, the best would be to continue to fulfill your duty as best as you are able."
