Nova hopped over a pile of dishes on the floor, made his way past the dirty, stained couch, maneuvered around the mountains of dirty laundry and finally arrived in the kitchen. Inside, empty cupboards were the sight of the day. With nothing to eat out of he came to the conclusion that he ma as well just order some takeout... like he had for the past two weeks...

All in all, Nova's apartment was a mess. How did he live here? Perhaps out of some sort of self hate? Whatever the case, it was time to get cleaning. He grabbed a pile of laundry and went straight to the empty washing machine with it. He came back. Grabbed the dishes and placed them in the sink. He started to run some water on the, to get the dried food rehydrated and easier to clean of. Then he swept, vacuumed, and mopped his living space. After that he got on those dishes.

Cleaning those was like watching an x rated horror film. He was sure that some of the mold had gone sentient and growled at him. He quickly disposed of it in the garbage disposal. It took him nearly an hour to do all of that and another load of laundry. After which, he went around and picked up all the pizza boxes, Xi-Bian food trays and fast food bags. By the end he had three stuffed trash bags full of garbage that he'd brought to the street for pickup. He went back to his couch and layed down for a rest... But why should he stop here?

The movers were more than happy to be paid to bring out the old, crusted, stained couch out and bring in the brand new, pearl-white, velvet couch. It was larger, big enough to fit four ponies comfortably. Though, the walls were a bit dreary and dirty... So why not paint them? He did them in a scarlet with a black central stripe going horizontally across each wall. He even got some new, thick black curtains to keep the sun out during the day. He threw out his old sheets and mattress to replace them with new ones. A warm bed spread with coltic trim was the final piece of the equation.

Nova stepped back and looked at his brand new living space. He was much more proud about this one than what it used to be. He'd have to keep it like this from now on. He took a dive onto the new couch and laid there comfortably with a big smile on his face. It was nice being able to lie down without feeling last weeks lunch entering his coat.

Not one to waste much time, Hargreaves clambered off of her bed, carelessly tossing the simple linen sheets off of the bare mattress. The room was cold and grey, the air was still and quiet, and the curtains on the window were shut, leaving the room in near total darkness. This was how she liked it. This will never change.

Sitting up on the edge of the bed, her dreary gaze found the floor, plain and wooden. It had not been cleaned in ages, but it was not cluttered. If one looked carefully, they could see a few trails worn into the dust that settled in a thick layer across the room, piling up into mountains in the corners, save for one of them that one of the trails led to. A ball of dust rolled from somewhere across the room and brushed up against one of her hooves, bumping into it again and again like a lost puppy that just wanted some attention. Eve looked down at the source of the tickle, and lifted her leg to crush the dust ball. There was no satisfaction in the action, and it was a waste of her time, as usual. Despite that, it was the closest she came to tidying up the place ever since she moved in.

With a deep sigh, she stood up off the bed and slowly walked across one of the trails to the door, not once lifting her gaze off of the floor, causing her mane to hang down around her face in a dark shroud. A light thumping could be heard from across the building, but it did not seem to affect her. She had to accept the fact that she was living in the vicinity of other ponies and such obnoxious disturbances were to be expected. Her journey to the kitchen ended at the cupboard, which she opened up to a rather pitiful display of canned foods. Not even looking at what was on the labels, she reached up and grabbed one before shutting it, making a minimal amount of noise as it closed.

As if to spite the efforts she made to be silent, another thump was heard in the same direction as the last. A small scowl crossed her lips as she reached for the seven and a half inch blade that lay sheathed on the countertop. Of the few things she kept, this was the one she treasured the most, and she gripped it tightly as several more thumps could be heard. Damnit, you idiots better be doing something useful or so help me... She unsheathed the blade and jabbed the tip of it into an edge of the can, skillfully flipping the knife about once more to tap the top lightly with the hilt. She then brought the can to her lips and downed as much as she could as fast as she can. It was too sweet, must have been pineapples again.

As soon as she finished, she brushed it off of the counter and into the bucket she used as a trash can, the clatter of similar cans hitting each other sounding in unison with each other. Hargreaves flinched once more as the silence was yet again broken, and a dull pain could be felt deep in her head. It was going to be another one of those days it would seem. Grabbing a cup and filling it with water from the tap, she took a bright blue pill of ibuprofen from a white bottle next to the sink and swallowed it. Her migraines needed to be kept in check, and those... damn... NOISES... were not helping her one bit.

Her routine found herself back in her bedroom, following the trail once more to the cleaner corner of the room where she sat down, facing the wall. She stared deep into the plain gray wall, eyes searching the minute details of the plaster, every bump, every hill, every crevice, every valley, every imperfection to a detail that many ponies took for granted. Hargreaves could feel her mind settling into a more calm state as she began her process of meditating. It was all she had to pass the time-

*THUMP* *THUMP* "Dusty I'm sure if ya lifted that end of the couch up a little more, I could clear this staircase a lot better." *THUMP* "Stow it Packer, I'm not paid enough to deal with this, let alone your cocky attitude, and this couch reeks."

Eve's eyes shot open as the racket in the hallway reached her, destroying her concentration and sending a flare of anger throughout her mind. What the hell was so important out there that it needed to absolutely destroy the peace in this damn apartment? She stood up and stormed over to the front door, ready to throw it open and give whomever was out there a piece of her mind, but she had to stop herself. The insufferable landlord already gave her a final notice about her behaviour towards other residents, also mentioning that even though the resident of room nineteen may have deserved it, they were scared witless and were afraid to sleep for the next week in fear.

So she stopped and glared at the door for a few more minutes, listening and loathing every single hoofstep she heard go from the hallway and back to the front entrance. It seemed that whomever caused the disturbance was gone now, and she could at least get back to her silent existence now. Eve pulled up a chair to the small table against the wall in the kitchen, bringing with her the knife she used to open the can of food. Holding it in one hoof, she flicked her leg, and it flipped through the air once, before landing back on her hoof, again, and again, and again, catching it in the ghostly white glow of her magic whenever she missed. Just another way to pass the time, just another way to... to... The knife stopped flipping and it froze in her hoof for a second as she flared her nostrils, sniffing the air.

The smell of wet paint. Revolting. How absolutely REVOLTING! She let out a loud and angry groan as she embedded the knife in the table, leaving another groove amongst the many in the table. Somepony was remodeling today, of all days. Any other day would have been better, preferably if it was a day when she no longer lived in this hell-hole and had to put up with the cockamamie residents that called it home. She grabbed hold of her knife again, wiggling it back and forth to work it out of the wood before returning it to the sheathe on the counter as she headed to the door. The last thing she needed to confront this unruly resident was a weapon, she never did have to use one anyway, it allowed her to be a little more creative.

She stumbled backward as she walked to the door, almost as though she hit a wall, reeling backwards as she held her nose. That smell was too strong. It was not worth confronting somepony in that, as much as she wanted to. She glared at the door she had yet to open once today and snorted before she stormed back into her room, jumping onto the plain mattress and throwing the sheet over her face to filter the smell.

Hargreaves stayed like this until the smell subsided. When it finally did some few hours later, she rolled off of the bed and immediately made her way to the door, opening it and closing it without caring if the door slammed shut behind her. Even though her anger had subsided over her need to keep from inhaling the noxious fumes, she still had to confront this pony. The smell of drying paint was still strong, and she followed it, passing by a familiar apartment, which she gave pause to as she passed. This apartment lacked that rotting cheese smell, but instead gained the drying paint one, and she honestly could not decide which one was worse.

Whatever. She raised her hoof and rapped on the door three times, glaring at it with a look of coldest apathy that belied the angry thoughts in her head. Thinking on the bright side, at least this apartment was somewhat clean, the drying paint would not last long. She would have to remember that to completely avoid telling off this resident. As she remembered, se waited patiently, like the spider waited for the fly to wander into it's web.

Nova had opened the windows, keeping the curtains closed of course, to allow the paint fumes to vent out. He was just about to doze off for the morning when there was a knock at the door. He wasn't expecting company today. Perhaps the landlord had come to ask about the paint smell. Either way, he would have to delay his sleep. He got up and went to the door "Just a moment." He said as he started undoing locks. He stretched out his leathery wings as he tried to wake himself.

He opened the door and gazed down with tired eyes at the... All black, young mare standing in his doorway. "Uh..." He wiped the sleep from his eyes "Can I help you?" He asked, curious as to her presence.

The door didn't take too long to open, which was something. Of anything to take a turn in the right direction, it was the last obstacle between her and her objective, the one who had decided to intrude in her daily routine with their vain and pointless remodeling. The door swung open and the sound of the hinges creaking against each other and locks undoing themselves grinded against her eardrums, making her want to claw at her ears like there was a hornet that decided to climb into them.

When the door swung open Hargreaves looked up at a gray pegasus bat-pony, and glared at him. She watched as he lifted a leg to rub the sleep from his eyes, which annoyed her immensely. SLEEPING? You were SLEEPING? I hope you were having some sweet dreams pretty boy, because I'm gonna... I'm gonna... She stopped mid thought and took a deep breath, trying as hard as she could to contain herself. She took a quick glance pat him and noticed the well furnished room behind him, raising an eyebrow at the choice of paint and the large couch. Interesting. Looks much better than my apartment, then again, I don't bother with it. She needed to be able to have someplace to live, and this was probably one of the few apartments that asked few questions and still had standards.

Be nice Eve, for all you know, he could be a benefit to you in the future. She forced a false smile across her face, trying as hard as she could to be as convincing and sincere as possible. Her face began to ache, it had been too long since she attempted a smile like this. In a rather uninterested and flat tone of voice, she spoke up, not once breaking eye contact, "My apologies, did I disturb your sleep princess?"

Hargreaves gave a throaty chuckle at the statement. Of course she did, what a delightfully rhetorical question. She looked past him and inhaled through her nose again. The paint smell was still here, but then again, that rotten smell she always experienced whenever she passed by this apartment was admittedly much worse. "I assume it was you who was making a lot of noise? May I ask what you are doing in there?"

"... Princess?" He repeated. That little bit of snark was a bit rude Nova thought. Though when she went on to explain, it made a bit more sense. "Oh, yeah, sorry. The place was a mess, so I just decided to do it all in one go." In hind sight, it probably wasn't a good idea to do so during his normal hours, when he was awake and everyone else was sleeping. "I didn't mean to disturb anyone, I just needed to clean. I was just about to turn in for the day actually so... Unless there's anything else..." He wanted to get to sleep. The sun was already up and he was sure he had duty tonight. Such was the curse of being a Night Guard after all.

Hargreaves lowered her head, nodding as this pony seemed to have other plans for tonight, such as more sleep, which was odd. It was nearly morning, not many ponies had such a reverse sleeping schedule. He could only have been trying to just brush her off. "'Turning in for the day'? I hope you are not just trying to avoid me."

Shaking her head slightly, she continued, "I've heard so many excuses pretty boy, but turning in for the 'day'? That takes the cake. Oh well, just wanted to introduce myself, maybe see if I could find out the reason behind that racket you were making. No, you just wanna enjoy your sleep."

She shrugged and cocked her head slightly, looking slightly disappointed, "Oh well, if that's the case, I will not bother you anymore..." An idea formed in her head, and she added a little quieter, almost somberly, "You see, I only just moved in here, and the damn movers haven't even brought my things here yet. I was hoping maybe a friendly face would help with someplace to stay until they arrive. It's kind of cold and bland in my apartment and I don't think I could stand staying another night in there until I'm finally able to settle in..."

Nova was a bit skeptical. ".. You mean to say, you want to stay with me until your stuff gets here..." He could see how that could end badly in a number of ways. But still... She didn't look like the type of pony that could easily get the advantage over him. As long as he kept some sort of eye on her, it might be ok.

He sighed and opened the door all the way allowing the pony inside. "Come on in." He said with a defeated tone. He was to tired to say no. His wings flapped once, as if in protest to his discision then folded themselves at his sides.

Eve cracked another smile, as the pony stepped aside and gave her room to walk in. Lowering her head in gratitude as she made her way inside, quietly saying, "Thank you." She stopped briefly as his strange leathery wings flapped once. They were unfamiliar, and they gave her pause briefly, but she brushed the slight hesitation aside and walked past him, slowing down as she looked around the room. It was indeed a lot better than her apartment, a lot less stuffy, had more furniture, and just looked more like a home than where she stayed.

She wandered over to the couch, placing a hoof on it and pushing down on it, testing it before she pulled herself down onto it and sat down. Definitely a lot better than that springbox she called a mattress. She looked over at the pegasus, taking note of how tired he looked. It would seem that he wasn't lying about needing to sleep. Perhaps it wasn't an attempt to brush her off. Still, she had to keep up the illusion of being the lonely mare with no place to stay for now.

The light gray unicorn spoke up again simply, glancing over at the pegasus, looking mostly at his leather wings, "My name is Eve, stranger." Realizing after a few seconds that she was staring, she averted her gaze, trying not to throw off her host. The newly painted wall would have to do. "You mentioned you were going to sleep soon? May I ask what you wake up to?"

Nova closed and locked the door, then went and stood by the couch where 'Eve' had gone and sat. "Call me Nova." He said. It felt nice having company over without having to worry about how his apartment looked. Of course, he'd be a little short on money now, but it was worth it. He blinked at her question and looked down at his wings... Nope, still here. "It's not obvious?" He asked with an awkward expression. "I'm a Lunar Guard. Most of my 'day' is at night."

Eve gave another smile as the door closed and locked. Her plan was at least coming to fruition, no need to spend a restless night in her bland apartment again. Just keep playing it out until he falls asleep, and she will be in the clear to drop this charade. The stranger stood by the couch instead of sitting on it as well, which put Hargreaves a little on edge. Did her ruse slip at some point? Was he going to just kick her out anyway with some choice words? No, why else would he have been so inviting then instead of turning her around and sending her back?

He then introduced himself. So it was Nova, then. If she didn't know any better, she would say that he looked a bit nervous. Been quite a while since you had a mare in your apartment, didn't ya pretty boy? I can only imagine why, but I bet it had something to do with the smell of rot and decay, you damnable slob. At least you clean up nice, but how long before you decide to slip down that slope again and your efforts today end up in vain? Her sarcastic inner voice helped to keep her somewhat relaxed, and she leaned a little further back, examining a hoof with a look of disinterest. Her relaxation would turn to boredom incredibly fast, as it always did. Her monotonous life in her apartment did seem to do that a lot.

When he answered her question, she raised another eyebrow, slight interest piquing across her face. The Lunar Guard, eh? Interesting. She never would have guessed a Lunar Guard would reside here, but then again, what did it matter? As far as she was concerned, they were just as easy to dodge as the Solar Guards, and she did love the dark. Never would she have guessed she would be spending a night... err, day with one of them.

Nonchalantly, she pulled her hind legs up onto the couch, leaning her back against the legrest as she made herself more comfortable. There was still enough room on the four pony couch, why did he not bother to sit down? She glanced back at Nova for a second and said, "I wouldn't say too obvious... 'Nova'. I just moved here, and I don't usually travel at night. I guess I would have been lucky to even catch a glimpse of you guys when I'm up around my normal hours."

This couch. It was good. Continuing to sink into the cushions, she continued, "At least you have a steady job right now. Most of what I do to keep myself off of the street is odd jobs. I guess I still have to get started with something here..." Again she looked over to him, still quite reserved herself as she asked, "So what's being a Lunar Guard like?"

"Right..." Nov replied, of course it wasn't obvious. His schedule kept him nocturnal and thus out of sight of daytime ponies. "It's alright I guess." he responded to Eve's question. He let out a yawn. "It's actually pretty dangerous, because most of the gangs and trouble makers like to work at night. As such, the training to even get this job is more rigorous than that of Solar Guards."

He looked towards his bedroom. He could see his bed inviting him through the doorway. Turning back to the young mare he asked "Since I'll be working tonight, I guess you can go ahead and take my bed to sleep. The pantry's fully stocked, so you shouldn't have any problem fining something to eat." he let out another long, tired yawn. "The bathroom is over there behind the kitchen. I really need to get to sleep now... I'll see you later tonight I guess..." with that he turned and started walking to his bedroom Finally, I can get to sleep! He thought to himself as he reached the doorway.

Eve nodded along absentmindedly as Nova explained how dangerous it was to be a night guard, faking interest in his words. Of course she knew what it was like at night, she had her own fair share of travels around in the dark. It was the most peaceful time of day, and the natural cover allowed her to get away with more... questionable acts that would not have been accepted with normal society. Her seven and a half inch blade on the counter of her apartment wasn't just for opening cans.

She started paying attention again as Nova started explaining where everything was in the house, from the bathroom to the bedroom he would be spending the day in. He probably expected her not to really move from his apartment, but then again, what else would she do? It would probably be the same things she would do in her apartment anyway, just in a more homely setting. She nodded again as Nova wrapped up the verbal tour of his apartment, watching as he turned to walk towards the doorway to his bedroom.

Eve smiled as innocently as she could, giving him a little wave as he walked towards another room in the apartment, "Good nigh- uh, morning, pretty boy. I'll see you when you wake up ." Inside her mind, she was practically laughing. This stallion just gave her free reign of his house, AND was going to sleep? She could not have asked for any easier targets, and the temptation of exploiting his vulnerable state did cross her mind, but rent was due in a week or so, and few ponies hired one with the talents and temperament of one such as herself. She needed a place to fall back to, and perhaps if she played her cards right, she could get into his good graces even more than she should be.

As he walked, Eve's curiosity piqued slightly and her attention focused on him for a while, giving a light and thoughtful, "Hmph...". Leaning back in the couch, she looked up at the ceiling, quite unsure what to think of what she just did. How ironic, a mare of my nature and a Lunar Guard sharing an apartment... Shaking her head lightly, she came to the conclusion that there would be plenty more time to take advantage of the different perks that came with this particular acquaintance, and some of them would have to wait a little longer than others. Right now though, she was feeling a little hungry. Sliding off of the couch, she wandered into the kitchen and opened the pantry, looking up and down at the selection of goods before reaching in and grabbing a granola bar.

Taking a bite out of the bar, enjoying the change of texture from the watery canned fruits and vegetables, she sat back down on the couch, slowly sliding onto her side, as she rested her head on top of her legs. She had been awake for a little while already, but perhaps she could have a nap to catch up on some of the lost sleep from earlier, maybe only for a little bit.

Nova climbed into the bed and got comfortable in his new sheets. He found it strangely difficult to fall asleep though. Probably due to there being a total stranger in his living room. He wasn't exactly sure how he was going to deal with that. Hopefully Eve wouldn't be staying there for much longer. He wasn't sure how well Stardust would take to that. In the meantime though, he needed to sleep and go to work later.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
(That night)
Nova had woken and began sorting through his duffel bag that he always brought to work. It was the usual; A towel, some workout items, a shirt or two, maybe a snack if he was going to be in the barracks for a long time. He walked out carrying the bag on his wing and set it by the door to grab before he left. It was time to check up on his new 'housemate'. "Eve" He called out, heading back into the living area.

Eve's head rested quietly on her forelegs, shifting slightly with a muffled grunt and sigh. This was probably the most comfortable surface she slept on in a long time. The mattress in her apartment did not come close to holding a candle to this couch. Her face buried deep into the cushions of the couch, sleeping without a dream for once, which meant there was actually rest this time. Fidgeting lightly again, she turned over to her other side. A nightmare was the last thing she wanted, not now especially, not when she just convinced somepony to let her stay for awhile.

Suddenly, the voice of that pony called her name through the living room and she woke with a start. Her eyes shot wide open and she scrambled up in in an upright position, instinctively reaching to her side where her blade would sleep beside her, the only companion she would never betray. Gasping loudly, and her mane incredibly dishevelled from sleeping on it, she looked around with both fearful and angry eyes, which became confused as the hoof that went for her knife simply went behind the cushions of the couch.

Her gaze fell upon the pegasus, bag slung over his wings. The adrenaline that dumped into her mind began to filter out, but not without first leaving her in a dazed shock that left her trembling slightly. For a few seconds she simply sat there breathing deeply, staring wide-eyed at Nova before her shoulders slumped and she relaxed. Speaking up in a whisper that barely contained her anger she said, "Luna in high hell Nova, don't do that!"

She wiped a hoof across her face and looked around for a window, only seeing the one with the blackout curtains. It was impossible to tell the time through those. Then again... She glanced back at Nova. ...if he is up now... She knew she already knew the answer to this question, but she had to ask, "Night time already, pretty boy? You off to work now?"

Nova raised an eyebrow, partly in confusion, partly in mild annoyance. "You know, you don't have to call me 'pretty boy'." He said, now walking away and to the windows. He opened them letting in the light of the now setting sun. "I told you, my name's Nova. And yes, I am off to work. Just need to shower first." He went towards the bathroom and shut the door behind him. It was a small space, but that was to be expected in an apartment. The walled shower stood at the back wall of the room the glass door distorted so as not to be easily seen through.

He turned on the water and adjusted the temperature until is was just right for waking up. He stood and let the water flow through his fur, many different thoughts going through his head. Thoughts of his training, thoughts of Stardust, thoughts of the LSF, more thoughts of Stardust. He shook his head and brought a hoof to his eyes. "Now is not the time to be thinking about her like that..." He said to himself.

When his shower was done he came back into the living area to check on Eve just before he left. His coat was still slightly damp to the touch, even after thoroughly drying it. "Hey, I'm going now. No uninvited guests. I'm being very generous letting you stay here, but you shouldn't count on me as a crutch. 'kay?"
